Tom Konansou Mount Fuji Hotel (湖南庄) was the most extravagant hotel during our 12 days of Travels in Japan. We decided to splurge on the $650 per night room at Konansou Mount Fuji Hotel because of the in-room onsen with views of Mount Fuji! :O
Konansou is also known as 胡南庄 – directly translated as “Pavilion South of the Lake”. This is because of its location at Funatsu-hama Onsen Town which is located south of Lake Kawaguchiko (河口湖). The stretch of 3 or 4 hotels at the onsen town were also atas, with huge lobby and traditional japanese architecture. Konansou Hotel was no different. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the staff at the entrance and were promptly checked in. Thereafter, a staff showed us to our room at level 6…

We were introduced to various parts of the room by the staff…
and of course the Yutaka (Japanese Cotten Robe) that you’ll be wearing during your stay…
Then, the highlight of the room. She pressed a button and the blinds lifted to reveal unblocked views of Mount Fuji from our room in Fuji Kawaguchiko Konansou Onsen Hotel!
Needless to say, it was simply breath-taking…
Just as this introduction was being done, another staff entered our room and we were handed over to this staff who served us green tea. At the same time, she asked what time we would like our dinner. As we were staying at the Deluxe Mountain view Japanese Style Room with Open-Air Bath, our dinner were served in our rooms. At first, she gave us a timing of 5 or 6pm. We thought that it was a little early as we wanted more time to enjoy views of Mount Fuji before sunset, so we requested for our dinner to be served at 7pm. Before she left, she also reminded us to slip into our Yutaka before heading over to the public bath house at level 4 (men) or level 5 (women). Do note that smoking is not allowed throughout the hotel’s premise except at level M2F. As avid Singapore Travel Bloggers, we set off to find these facilities for our readers! 😛 First up, the rooftop foot bath!
As the roof top foot bath only re-opened for the day at 3pm, there was only a couple enjoying the views of Mount Fuji. If guests who choose not to have in-room onsen, the roof top foot bath is another venue for unblocked views of Mount Fuji. Next we checked out the entrance of Hot Spring (Onsen) for women (level 5) and men (level 4)…
There’s also an amusement arcade for the kids at level 4 (which Tom checked out and found only really old games available) and laundry facilities at level 3.
After checking out the hotel premise, Tom decided to check out the Hot Spring Public Onsen for men at level 4. Although we already had the in-room onsen, Tom also wanted to experience the different pools available at the hot springs of Konansou Mount Fuji Hotel. This was the account of that experience…
Tom’s First Public Onsen Bath in Japan (No Pictures for Obvious Reasons)
As I walked past the veil of the public onsen bath at level 4, I was wondering if I had gone to the right place. There was nobody else there. I walked down a flight of stairs to the lounge and lockers. Still nobody. At this point, I was wondering whether the onsen was open or perhaps everyone was already inside the hot spring area. In order to “fit in”, I got butt naked and covered myself with bath towel before entering the hot spring area – this by the way is not allowed. You’re only supposed to bring in the small onsen towel which barely covers nothing. After I pushed open the door to the hot spring area, I finally realised that I HAD THE ENTIRE PUBLIC HOT SPRING TO MYSELF! 😛 Perhaps it was due to the maintenance hours, the onsen only re-opened at 3pm. Hence, if most people checked in at 3pm, there would be a short period right after 3pm that no one would be at the hot spring – except Tom that is!
As with all public onsen in Japan, the etiquette is to bathe yourself clean at one of the bathing cubicles next to the hot spring. The kind where you sit on a plastic stool and use tons of shampoo/body foam to clean yourself from top to bottom. I removed my bath towel and started the bathing process. I also noticed that there was also a plastic basin where you can fill up with water and rinse yourself after you’re done scrubbing down. I found the rinsing with hot spring waters particularly refreshing. Next, I strolled naked with my tiny towel in hand to one of the three pools within the onsen. There’s a main pool with views of Mount Fuji as well as an outdoor pool (also with views of Mount Fuji). Lastly, a pool with flowing waters like a mini waterfall for the hot spring waters to flow over you. After trying out all three pools, I rinsed myself one last time before heading out to the lounge/changing area – with my bath towel wrapped around me this time. This was where the “surprise” happened. As I pulled open the door, an old lady (staff) was walking towards the hot spring area to refill the towels. Luckily, I was covered. Else, it would DEFINITELY have been an awkward situation. After I was done, another young man came in. He removed all his clothes while the old lady was still walking around. After this “episode”, I had a go on the massage chair in the lounge before heading back to our room – completely refreshed.

Konansou Mount Fuji Hotel (湖南庄) In-room Dinner
We then tried out the in-room onsen and enjoyed the unblocked views of Mount Fuji. Thankfully, the day was clear and little/no clouds obscured our views of Mount Fuji that day. After the in-room onsen experience, we rested for a while and soon it was time for our in-room dinner, which was included in the price of the Deluxe Mountain view Japanese Style Room with Open-Air Bath at Konansou Hotel.
The extensive menu included
– Hors d’oeuvre and Aperitif
– “Sashimi” style raw fish
– Matsutake mushroom and Japanese broth steamed in a teapot
– Sukiyaki
– Vinegared fish and tofu
– Boiled dish (Made by boiling, simmering or stewing a mixture of vegetables with soy sauce)
– Rice, miso soup with crab, pickles
– Jelly and cake for desserts
Chef manu was prepared by Chef Yuzo Yamada. As we were browsing through this list of menu, our attendant quickly set up our table by spreading across a beautiful table spread and laying our dish one by one. Before long, this amazing sight appeared…
As with many Singaporeans, we then moved on to take a photo of each one of these dishes…

Besides the unique and beautiful setting for the dishes, the food was delicious as well. We particularly enjoyed the sukiyaki, sashimi and rice with ginko nuts. It was also interesting to note that the rice was perfectly cooked just by placing the heavy lid over the rice/water/ginko nuts mix. In fact, it was so good that even Kate (who is watching her figure) finished all the rice. Once we were done, we called reception and our boiled dish was brought up to our room. It consisted of boiled vegetables and due to the sweetness from the vegetables itself, the dish turned out to be closer to a dessert than a savoury dish. The other highlight was the dessert (which we had to call reception again after we were done with dinner). Just look at the Mount Fuji green tea cake. Cute and tasty!
Once dessert was done and the table was cleared, there was still one thing to be done before we turned in. Bed-making. While we were watching sports on TV (Japan National Team was playing soccer live on TV), the staff came in to make the bed for us. He set the tables aside and placed the mattress and quilt on the floor for us. Although the bed was set on the floor, it was surprisingly comfortable. Another authentic Japanese experience checked off our list…ah…
Konansou Mount Fuji Hotel (湖南庄) Buffet Breakfast
We actually woke up early in the morning at 5:30am to check out the views of Mount Fuji. However, the clouds obscured the view at 5:30, 6am and 6:30am. At 6:30am, we decided to do our Quiet Time (QT) and the next thing we knew, the clouds were gone, revealing Mount Fuji as we soaked in the in-room hot spring (onsen)! After a relaxing and enjoyable dip, we washed up and headed for breakfast at about 8:30am.
The breakfast at Konansou Hotel is from 7:15am to 9:30am (last entry at 9am) daily at the Restaurant Moegi (level 3). This is the same venue for all guests in the hotel.

The breakfast buffet spread here is one of the few overseas hotels that can compete with those in Singapore Hotels. The variety was extensive and covered western, japanese and cereals for the kids. Moreover, the stewed pork and Fujizakura sliced pork was fantastic. Although the hoto noodles was not as good as that of Sanrokuen, it still made for a hearty breakfast.
Before we left, we tried out the dessert section which was FANTASTIC! By then, we were already so full! But if you’re visit Konansou Mount Fuji Onsen Hotel, you must try the matcha cake and matcha ice cream together with the coffee. Yumilicious!
