Chicago’s most famous food has got to be the deep dish pizza. Where else to get the best deep dish pizza than Pizzeria Uno and Pizzeria Due? Opened in 1943 by Ike Sewell, Pizzeria Uno was the original deep dish pizza joint that combined large quantities of meats, vegetables and cheese into a hearty pizza meal. Before long, throngs of customers came and Ike expanded to open Pizzeria Due. Today, the same hearty deep dish pizza meal is still served at Uno & Due with some customers swearing by either one of them. For instance, we were recommended by a friend (who grew up in Chicago) we met on Norwegian Cruise to Corzumel, Belize and Honduras to visit Pizzeria Due. We ordered the small Numero Uno ($18.79) and it was such a delectable experience! Definitely a “must-try”! But be prepared for a wait (we waited 45 minutes during off-peak period) which is well-worth it!

The other Chicago favourite food joint is Portillo’s. Portillo’s started off as a hot dog stand in 1963. Today, it serves all of America’s favourite foods such as burgers, milk shakes and dipped sandwich. This time, we went for the large strawberry milk shake ($3.89) and Italian beef dipped sandwich ($5.75) and was duly satisfied.

What to eat in Chicago Illinois

Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse

Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse is a classy joint in Chicago that serves up signature steaks and martinis. This time, we opted to go for another favourite here, the Carrot Cake!

Actually, we came here just for the Carrot Cake ($17.25). 😛 Probably one of the best we’ve had and definitely the biggest carrot cake we’ve seen on a table! The carrot cake was loaded with ingredients and had to be held in by a knife right in the middle! Of course we were not able to finish the entire slice (yes, that was only a slice), we packed the rest to go but we also got the chance to enjoy the Cobb Salad (Small – $9.75) and Baby Back Ribs (Full Slab – $25). The Cobb Salad portion was huge, good for 2 to share. The Baby Back Ribs tasted good, tender and all but was not as meaty on the top as expected. As for the steaks, we’ve tried what was touted as the “Best Steaks in Town” at Metropolitan Grill Seattle and was not fully convinced. Hence, we decided to give it a miss this time.

If you’re into donuts, then you definitely can’t miss Do-Rite Donuts & Coffee in Chicago. You’ll probably find a queue for these gorgeous looking (and tasting) donuts during opening hours of this joint. We even met a friend we’ve made during our California Zephyr Amtrak ride from Emeryville to Chicago here! This time, we tried the chocolate and pistachio-meyer lemon ($1.95 to $2.50 each). Do note that it’s a breakfast/brunch place and closes by 2pm daily.

Dim Sum & Noodles @ Chicago’s Chinatown

If you’re looking for asian fare, head over to Chicago’s Chinatown. We had dim sum and noodles at affordable prices here. No particular recommendations though we did dine at Mayflower and Chi Cafe. Cure for asian food cravings at an affordable price.
