If it is your first time in Universal Studios Hollywood, you will certainly be impressed with the details placed into designing the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Inside this zone, you’ll be able to stroll through Hogsmeade and enter iconic shops such as the Owl Post, Ollivanders Wand Shop and Honey Dukes (Every Flavour Beans). Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey Simulation/Movement ride is certainly the best ride in Universal Studios Hollywood. Before the ride, you’ll walk through the hall of talking portraits, the Defence Against the Dark Arts Classroom, Dumbledore’s office and even a photo opportunity with the sorting hat. Lastly, don’t forget to visit the Three Broomsticks Restaurant where you’ll enjoy the favourite drink of characters in Harry Potter – Butter Beer. While we were waiting at Ollivanders Wand Shop for the demonstration, the staff told us that besides the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Springfield USA from World of the Simpsons is her next favourite zone. This is because, you cannot find a recreation of Springfield from the Simpsons, anywhere else in the world. After we visited the zone, we found that what she said was true. At Springfield USA, World of the Simpsons, you’ll be able to have a Duff Beer (both lager and ale specially brewed by a microbrewery for Universal Studios @ $10.99) at Moe’s Pub, enjoy Krusty’s Burger (we had the Clogger Burger – double patty for $13.99) and see many other iconic structures such as Apu’s Kwik-E-Mart, Lard Lad Donuts, Luigi’s Pizza and Pasta, Springfield Penitentiary and even Krustyland! As Kate’s a fan of the Simpsons, it was a treat to see the entire recreation of Springfield and we even got a shot with Marge and Homer while we’re there! While you’re there, check out the Simpsons Ride (which we enjoyed) – one of the best rides in Universal Studios Hollywood.

Another attraction that is only available at the Universal Studios Hollywood is the Studio Tour. The Studio Tour takes you through the back lot of Universal Studios Hollywood. Here, you’ll be able to see the different sets such as New York, Europe, Old West, Wisteria Lane (Desperate Housewives), crash site of War of the Worlds and more. There are also two 3D experiences during the tour where the entire tram enters into a tunnel and you’ll be able to watch King Kong 360 and Fast & Furious – Supercharged in the world’s largest 3D experience. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to spot stars filming during office hours at Universal Studios.

The Special Effects Show is another cool show to watch. During the show, we were introduced to the various kinds of special effects that movie makers use to create desired effects in films. For instance, miniatures were constructed to film “sky view” shots of cities. Of course, these days, real drones are used to create the same effect. A fire stunt was performed live and the audience was asked to take part in creating sound effects for a scene in a movie. Our favourite? Calibrating body movement and superimposing Ted on the screen such that Ted would follow your movements! How cool is that?!

Top Things to do and Attractions in Universal Studios Hollywood
We were surprised to find out that the Transformers at Universal Studios Hollywood actually does thrash talking! In Singaporean language, that’s “suan-ing”. Transformers characters such as Megatron and Optimus Prime, not only poses for a photograph, they will talk about your dress, your poses and criticize them. Optimus, of course, does it in a gentler way. Not so for Megatron. So prepare your egos for this photo-taking experience!
