There are so many things to do and attractions in Jaipur. Known as the Pink City, the city of Jaipur got its name because the entire city is painted with terracotta “pink” colour (known as Jaipur Pink). To welcome Prince Albert Edward in 1876 (Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VII), Maharaja (Sawai Ram Singh) decided to paint the entire city in an welcoming pink colour. It was later legislated to be illegal for these protected buildings to be painted in any other colour. Hence, the colour remained over a 100 years after the visit of the Prince of Wales!

Jaipur Attraction #1: Hawa Mahal
Also known as the “Palace of Breeze”, Hawa Mahal was built as an extension to the City Palace in 1799. It was said that the 953 windows of Hawa Mahal, not only allowed the cool breeze to enter its premise, it also allowed royal ladies of that time to view processions and activities on the streets without being publicly seen. Today, it is one of the most visited attraction in Jaipur because of its beautiful and unique architecture.

Jaipur Attraction #2: Amber Palace (Amber Fort)
Also known as Amer Fort, Amber Fort is actually a palace (hence the name Amber Palace) that was constructed in the 16th century during the reign of Raja Man Singh I in the 1600s as the home for the rulers. From the top of Fort Amer, you’ll also be able to view the “Great Wall of Amer”. Within Amber Palace’s grounds, there are also beautiful attractions such as Mirror Palace, Sukh Mandir and Sunken Hexagonal Garden. Do take time to enjoy the hidden treasures within.

Jaipur Attraction #3: Step Well Jaipur
There are many step wells all across India. Although the Step Well we visited is not as famous as the Chand Baori Step Well, we were still able to see the architectural brilliance of the step well structure. With the steps, villagers were able to access the underground fresh water, have a water storage facility and also have a beautiful series of steps that allows access. Ingenuity!

Jaipur Attraction #4: Jaipur Water Palace (Jal Mahal)
The official name for Jaipur Water Palace is Jal Mahal. Also known as Lake Palace, Jal Mahal was built in 1799 and was initially built in an area of depression where water accumulated. Man Sagar Lake, which surrounds Jal Mahal was only formed AFTER a dam between the two hills in its vicinity. The Water Palace consists of 5 stories, 4 of which stands below the surface of the water and was designed to keep waters from Man Sagar Lake out.

Jaipur Attraction #5: Gaitore (King’s Tomb) Jaipur
Besides being the tomb for the rulers of Rajasthan, Gaitore (King’s Tomb) has many instagram-worthy sights. Nearby, you will be able to see “The Great Wall of Amer” up close and be able see the families of monkeys roaming freely on its grounds.

Jaipur Attraction #6: City Palace Jaipur
In 1727, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II moved his court from Amber to Jaipur. This was how City Palace Jaipur came to be the administrative seat of Rajasthan. Like Amer Palace, there are also “hidden secrets” within, waiting to be discovered. For instance, the doorway of City Palace Jaipur are famous instagram spots that you simply can’t miss.

Things to do in Jaipur #7: Experience the Royal treatment at Taj Rambagh Palace Hotel
Have you heard about the extravagance of the Rajasthan royalties? The luxurious architecture with exorbitant, yet leisurely, afternoon teas. You can experience all of these at Taj Rambagh Palace Hotel. Celebrities from all over the world visit and stay at the Taj Rambagh. During our visit to the Verandah Cafe for afternoon tea, we also noticed many other guests checking us out (while we did likewise) – a common “activity” at Taj Rambagh to suss out if there are any famous personalities or celebrities within the hotel’s premise.

Things to do in Jaipur #8: Delicacies of Rajasthan
Besides the “ang mou” afternoon tea spread (known as Victorian Splendor) at Taj Rambagh, there’s also the Maharaja’s Sojourn – a Rajasthani take on the afternoon tea. Non-vegetable Thali was also one of our favourite. Remember to add on a cheese naan to the spread as well! 😉
