Standing Bar is probably one of the top venues for craft beers in Hanoi. Unbeknownst to us, Hanoi actually does have a burgeoning craft beer scene and while dining at an upscale restaurant in Hanoi that does beer pairing, Standing Bar was mentioned. The other reason why Standing Bar is worth a visit is because of its view over Truc Bach Lake (pronounced as “chooke bark” lake) at the open air area of its 2nd level…

Craft Beers available at Standing Bar Hanoi
During our visit, there 17 craft beers on tap available. The great thing about visiting Standing Bar is that the craft beers on tap are rotated on a regular basis. Also, they bring in craft beers from the various Vietnamese breweries across Vietnam. This includes:
– Overmorrow Brewing Company (Hanoi)
– 7 Bridges Brewing Co. (Danang)
– Heart of Darkness (HCMC)
– Platinum Beers (HCMC)
– East West Brewing Co. (HCMC)
– Rooster Beers (HCMC)
– Hoprizon Brewing Company (HCMC)
– De Me Brewing (HCMC)
– Northern Soul Craft Beer
– Wild Side Brewing Company
Admittedly, due to the larger population and craft beer startups in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), there are many guest taps from HCMC breweries. Standing Bar also has a small selection of light bites…
Light Bites (Standing Bites) available at Standing Bar Hanoi
Known as “Standing Bites”, the snack selection at Standing Bar is rather extensive. However, you should not be expecting a full course, seated meal. We guess that at “Standing Bar”, even though there are plenty of seats, the food offering should be convenient for patrons to just pick on, nibble and enjoy the craft beers along with it. Food should not be the priority. The beers ought to. Nonetheless, there’s also daily blackboard menu available as well…
During our visit to Standing Bar Hanoi, we ordered the French Fries (50k VND or $3SGD) from the food menu as well as the Pork Shashlik (80k VND or $5SGD) from the Blackboard menu. The great thing about drinking and dining at Standing Bar is that the prices are already inclusive of taxes. What you see is what you pay.

Standing Bar Hanoi – Level 2 Seats with Views over Truc Bach Lake
There were some seats at level 1. That’s where the toilets are and easy access to the beers – you don’t have to contend with the stairs, especially after having knocked back a couple of beers. Nonetheless, we still headed upstairs to check out the seats and views from level 2 of Standing Bar…
Despite the name, Standing Bar actually does have alot of seats. At level 2, there are also large tables that can accommodate large groups. We can imagine that it does get crowded over the weekends. Moving outdoors, there are a couple of long but thinner tables along with with a horizontal table meant for views over Truc Bach lake…
Outdoors are probably where most of the “standing” takes place at Standing Bar. This is because the tables are relatively thin and probably not suitable for much dining and more suitable for groups of friends to stand around, perching their drinks on the thinner tables. We had to arrange our food and drinks a little just to accommodate everything. Thankfully we came on a weekday night before the evening crowds came after work. Of course, the views are not too bad as well…
There are seats that directly faces Truc Bach Lake. Perfect for those who wants to just sip on a beer and enjoy the views as the evening winds down. During our visit, a couple was sitting there as well. Kate also managed to catch a beautiful view of clouds reflecting over the waters of Truc Bach Lake…

What We had at Standing Bar Hanoi Truc Bach Lake
We started off the evening with Tete Juicy Peach Ale (140K – $8.5SGD) and 7 Bridges Dragon IPA (130K or $8SGD). Both were excellent craft beers but having been introduced to craft beers at Brewerkz, IPAs were definitely a favourite for us. Soon, the food arrived as well…
We were informed by some of our local friends that potato products are particularly good in Vietnam. That’s why we started with the French Fries (50K) which came out to be delicious and flavourful. The Pork Shashlik (80k) was also not too bad. At $5SGD for 2 sticks, it is still relatively affordable by our standards and we must say that the meats are chunky as well.
Lastly, we rounded up the evening sharing a 7 Bridges Imperial IPA (145K or $9SGD). All beers we had this evening were 500ml in volume. Hence, by SG standards, craft beers in Vietnam are pretty affordable. Now, a quick sharing on pale ales. There are many different styles of pale ales but they can be largely distilled into three main types namely, Pale Ales, Indian Pale Ales (IPAs) and Double IPAs (sometimes known as Imperial IPAs). The difference between the three are in terms of flavours and alcohol content. Double IPAs are the most hoppy, aromatic of the three and usually has the highest alcoholic content as well. In terms of bitterness, they should not differ as significantly though we think that double IPAs due to their more robust flavours may come across as slightly more bitter. Across the 3 flavours though, we enjoy IPAs the most. Hoppy but not too heavy. Yum!
