Banh Cuon Thanh Van Hanoi Review: Freshly Prepared Rice Sheet Rolls for a Vietnamese Breakfast!

Entrance of Banh Cuon Thanh Van Hanoi

Banh Cuon was one of the items that we wanted to try during our recent trip to Hanoi. Banh Cuon is a common breakfast staple in Vietnam, especially in Northern Vietnam. Made of rice batter and steamed lightly before being filled with ingredients such as pork, chicken and shallots, we were glad that we were finally able to try out this Vietnamese breakfast dish known as Ban Cuon.

While enjoying a morning about in Hanoi, we stumbled upon Banh Cuon Thanh Van and saw that each sheet was lovingly spread, steamed, filled and rolled before serving to the customers. Afterall, the inside looks pretty clean as well…

The only issue we had at Banh Cuon Thanh Van was that the menu was all in Vietnamese. Thankfully, the owner was able to speak in good English. He came over and introduced us to the pork banh cuon (35k – $2) and the chicken banh cuon (40k VND – $2.25).

We love it that the Banh Cuon was steamed on the spot and when served to us, they were piping hot – just the way we like it. In terms of taste, we enjoyed the chicken a little more, which had more flavourful. We were also introduced by the owner to squeeze the lime into the dip before enjoying it with your banh cuon. Also, we love it that the coriander was fresh, increasing the fragrance, taste and texture. Lastly, the portion was quite generous. For $2, it was definitely a great meal for breakfast!
