Birds of Paradise Botanical Gelato was our first stop when we arrived at Jewel Changi Airport. Before our visit, we were asking for recommendations of what to eat in Jewel and Birds of Paradise came highly recommended. During this visit, we arrived at Birds of Paradise Gelato at 12pm, while everyone else were still having their lunch. This was also the time that they open for the day. Since there was no queue (which is not normally the case), we decided to try out Birds of Paradise Botanical Gelato!
Why Would One Visit Birds of Paradise Gelato
Before we go delve into Birds of Paradise Botanical Gelato, we’ll have to first examine the difference between gelato and ice cream. So…what really is the difference between ice cream and gelato?
Well, while both uses essentially the same ingredients of cream, milk and sugar, gelato actually uses less cream and more milk. This in turn means that gelato packs the same rich flavour with less sugar, fat and CALORIES per serving!
Besides it being a gelato parlour, Birds of Paradise also has 2 main attractions to its offerings. Firstly, the flavours are derived from natural tastes ranging from fruits and flowers to herbs, spices, nuts and pods. That is not all, the flavours usually have some kind of fusion – which we’ll show more later. Secondly, they make their own waffle thyme cones, fresh!
Flavours Available at Birds of Paradise Botanical Gelato Jewel
While waiting for our turn, we were intrigued by some of the flavours offered here. They had flavours that were floral, fruity, nutty, earthy, herby, spice or cacao.
There were also fusions in between these natural tastes. As the flavours change, these were the flavours that were available during our visit…
Flavours Available During Our Visit
Mango Sorbet
Lychee Raspberry
Spiced Pear
White Chrysanthemum
Strawberry Basil
Masala Spice
Roasted Sesame
Earl Grey and Lemongrass
Sea-Salt Hojicha
Don’t they all sound yummy??
Birds of Paradise Botanical Gelato Jewel – The Verdict
This time, we chose the fusion flavours of Earl Grey & Lemon Grass as well as Strawberry Basil. A single scoop costs $5 while a double scoop costs $8. The thyme cone costs an additional dollar. Hence, our double scoop actually costs $9 🥴
The big question remains. Was it worth it?
Both tastes were unique. Unlike any ice cream or gelato we’ve ever tasted. Both flavours were indeed very refreshing, making you want to come back for more – addictive even. The crisp thyme waffle cone, complemented the gelato well. At this price point, we’d say that it was worth it – but…perhaps not that often, lest we all burn a hole in our pockets. 😅
Before we left Jewel, we took a short walk over to Terminal 3 of Changi Airport. As we’re still in the COVID season, there weren’t many flights departing Singapore. Hence, we were also able to capture some photos that you’d not normally be able to have during pre-COVID times…
Hopefully these times won’t last and we’ll be able to resume travels in the not-too-distant future! 🙏
