Bistro Du Vin Review: Authentic French Cuisine with Quirky Good Service!

Bistro Du Vin Calvados Souffle ($20)

Bistro Du Vin was where we headed to recently for our anniversary celebration. We decided on Bistro Du Vin because we wanted to dine-in while strolling along Orchard one day and found that reservations had to be made. Since it was a venue that we wanted to visit, we thought it would be cool to have french cuisine on our anniversary. Reminiscence of our honeymoon in France…

There are 2 “tiers” of seatings in Bistro Du Vin. The tier above is at the street level where you can see pedestrians and cars pass by. Also, due to the narrowness of the high tier, there are only 2 seaters here. At the lower tier (as seen from the picture above), group seatings can be arranged. You’ll also be able to see that alot of thought has been placed into re-creating the casual french bistro ambience through the furnishings, music and decorations on the wall. That was rather cool. After we were seated down, we were given some time to browse through the menu…

There are so many dishes that we wanted to try. There’s the duck confit, the foie gras, escargots, sea bass and mussels However, we knew from reviews that the portions are rather generous and also that we had budget constraints 😅 Hence, we went with the crowd favourites of beef cheek and lamb shank. There are also other options available that rotates weekly…

After ordering, we were served some breads. Very french indeed…

We also ordered some wines to go with, the 2021 Sancerre, Regis Jouan ($17 – which retails at $50 a bottle) as well as the 2018 Chateau Clarisse ($19 – which retails at $60 a bottle). Great selections that went well with our selection this evening…

Before our mains arrived, Tom had a small little surprise for Kate…

Kate was pleasantly surprised 😀 When the flowers were delivered to our table, the lady at the next table asked her partner, “Now, where are my flowers?” 😅 As the flower was relatively large, our host Philippe offered to place it on a wine stand. He even added some cardboard to prop up the flower so it was visible throughout our evening. He even quipped that he enjoys a challenge. Thanks Philippe! While we’re still on Philippe, he’s one humorous fella. Back to our neighbours, the gentleman wanted to stand up and head to the toilet without his mask. This was when Philippe had to remind him to put on his mask but he added a joke saying, “This is a really strange virus. You can sit there and have your meal without mask but when you stand up – mask on. It spreads when you stand up.” 😂

Soon, our dinner arrived…

Bistro Du Vin Lamb Shank ($44)

Bistro Du Vin Beef Cheek ($44)
Bistro Du Vin Beef Cheek ($44)

Both dishes were really really good. The Braised Lamb Shank with tomatoes & spices, potatoes ($44) was really tender and the meat didn’t have the gamey taste (at all) that is usually associated with lamb. Judging from the picture, you can see that the portion is rather generous as well. Next, the Braised Beef Cheek in red wine, carrots, mashed potatoes, bacon ($44). If we had to choose, the braised beef cheek edged out the lamb shank a little. Simply because the beef had been infused with the red wine and there’s a slight tangy-ness to the dish that made it that much more appetising. Goes really well with the bread too.

To round up the meal, we went with another crowd favourite – Calvados Souffle ($20)…

Bistro Du Vin Calvados Souffle ($20)
Bistro Du Vin Calvados Souffle ($20)

Although the Calvados Souffle, at $20, seems to be a little costly, it isn’t. After tasting it, we understood why. It was probably the best souffle we’ve ever tasted. The souffle was really soft and fluffy while the mild eggy-ness and milky taste could be experienced with each mouth. Very satisfying. Little wonder that the souffle is imprinted on the windows of Bistro Du Vin.

After dinner, we caught Thor (Love & Thunder)…

“You flicked too hard!” – Russel Crowe was so funny…😂

The total bill came up to $169.49. Considering the wines, the souffle, the generous mains and great service, it was still reasonably priced. However, it would likely remain a venue reserved for special occasions as well. Next time, we’re gonna try the truffle linguine!
