During one of our visits to Sentosa, we chanced upon Black Society restaurant at Vivocity. Black Society (黑社会) is a restaurant that offers Cantonese cuisine including dim sum, roasts and XLB (xiao long bao – aka steamed pork dumplings). Since, we have not visited a Cantonese restaurant for some time, we decided to review Black Society and we were pleasantly surprised!
Once you step into the restaurant, the front part of the restaurant resembles a cafe with greenery. Then, we were led to the “restaurant” part of Black Society, where you’d get views of Sentosa and the open-concept kitchen where you can see the chefs at work.
What to Eat at Black Society VivoCity
As it was a “lunchner” for us, we had a mixture of dim sum as well as as mains. If you’re deciding what to eat at VivoCity’s Black Society, here are some pictorial references for you…
Swan Black Pepper (Duck Yam Pastry)
Verdict: In terms of presentation, the dim sum was very well-crafted. Enjoyed the outer layer with its delicate crisps while within, there was the taste from the rich, flavourful yam. The only thing we didn’t anticipate was that the black pepper was a tad too heavy. Perhaps dialing down the black pepper a little would accentuate the flavours of the yam even further.
Black and White Pan Fried Bun
Verdict: While the presentation was nice (unique black/white outer skin), the bun portion was too thick for our liking while the filling was comparatively too little. Can probably give this pan fried bun (albeit innovative rendition), a miss.
Miss Piggy (Salted Egg Yolk Custard Pao)
Verdict: Isn’t the piggies so cute? Not only was the presentation great, the salted egg yolk custard flowed out as we went in for our first bite. Definitely a must-order for liu sha bao (流沙包) lovers!
Triple Platter – Roast Duck, Roast Pork Belly, Honey Roasted Pork
Verdict: All three roasts were great! Unlike some renditions where one of the three would be lacklustre, the version of all three roasts at Black Society were tasty. The cut of the honey roasted park (aka char siew) were a good mix of lean and fatty bits while the sauce was not too sweet. The pork roast had equal bits of pork, topped with the crispy skin that crackles on each bite. Lastly, the roasted duck had a beautiful and slightly crisp skin that released rich duck flavours as you continue to chew. The firm but well-roasted meat was delicious.
Braised Tofu with Shimeiji and Spinach
Verdict: This dish actually came as a surprise. We wanted to have some “vegetables” to complement the meal but tuned out that we stumbled upon a gem. The tofu itself was silky but instead of the usual plain beancurd taste, it was refreshing. The outer skin was fried to give a varied texture while the gravy complemented the overall taste. Beautifully done.
Claypot Beef Stew
Verdict: The highlight of our meal was definitely the claypot beef stew. When it was served, the whole claypot was still bubbling within its own juices – an enticing entry. Next, the beef was SO SO tender! The gravy was so flavourful that you could probably just have this dish and a bowl of plain rice. Take a look at the video to see what we mean!
Fried Rice with Seafood and XO Sauce
Verdict: Although we think that the rice and noodles are fairly expensive (original price of $16 but we had a 50% discount via Eatigo), the rice was indeed well-fried – culinary speak for every single grain of rice was coated with wok hei (smoky flavours). Topped with plenty of fried white bait (silver fish), it was indeed delectable.
