Happy 2018 everyone! More than a year ago, we embarked on this journey to accumulate miles for a pair of SQ first class from Singapore to Narita (Tokyo). If you have read our post on the fastest way to accumulate miles for a pair of SQ first class tickets to Japan, you’ll learn how we managed to do it by utilising the best travel credit cards in Singapore.
How to Book SQ First Class Tickets on Singapore Airlines Website
1. You MUST have sufficient Krisflyer Miles
In order to make a booking using miles redemption on the Singapore Airlines website, you must have sufficient Krisflyer miles for the tickets that you are booking. For this pair of one way SQ first class tickets from Singapore to Tokyo, the tickets costs 60,000 miles each or 120,000 miles for a pair of tickets. As it was booked a year in advance, we were also able to snag the 15% discount when booking online on the SQ website. The 15% online booking discount has since been discontinued by Singapore Airlines 🙁
The termination of the 15% discount was not all that Singapore Airlines did with the revamp in 2016. Today, the same tickets cost 65,000 miles or 130,000 miles for a pair of tickets – without the 15% discount. *even more sad*
2. Book a year in advance or be waitlisted
Due to the limited number of seats in first class (only 8 on the flight that we took), it is a common practice to book a year in advance. This is because
Firstly, once you are sure that you will be taking a particular route (in this case SIN to NRT), it will only cost $20USD if you want to make a change. This is a relatively small fee (if required) to ensure availability of flight. You can read the service fees related to SQ miles redemption here.
Secondly, even if the seats are not available, you can choose to be waitlisted for the seats. Although it requires that you have sufficient miles for the waitlisting to take place, your miles will not be deducted from your account until the tickets are issued to you – which is why some people do multiple waitlisting to ensure availability. This practice though, is not recommended by 2bearbear because it takes away the opportunity of another passenger who may only have that particular travel window.
How much we paid for our SQ First Class Tickets on Singapore Airlines Website
Although it seems like we only paid $131 SGD for the pair of SQ first class tickets, in reality, it was a little more. This is because, we had to pay membership fees on travel credit cards that gave better miles accrual rates. Nonetheless, all in all, we paid less than $800 SGD for the pair of SQ first class tickets which costs $10,748 SGD. We also had expenditures of approximately $20,000 SGD spent across all the credit cards (over a 2 year period). Hence, the approximate $10,000 return on $20,000 expenditure translates to a 50% reward! Of course, you will have to be on the constant lookout for expenditures that have $1: 4,6,8 or even 10 miles reward. Check out our post on the Best Travel Credit Cards in Singapore for more details!
Choosing our seats on SQ First Class Tickets from SIN to NRT
As we booked the flight close to a year in advance, there was only 1 other seat that was already taken (who must be a real travel expert or a real kiasu Singaporean ;P). Hence, we booked the two middle seats on the second row as the separation can be lifted allowing travellers to be “seated” next to each other. Of course in reality, due to the ginormous size of the SQ first class seats (approximately 4 to 5 times the size of an economy class seat), you are still seated a slight distance away. Nonetheless, if you lean in, you can still be able to speak to each other 😉
Book the Cook for meals on SQ First Class Seats
One of the highlights of travelling on the SQ first class seats is the fact that you’ll be able to do fine dining while flying up in the air. Now, that’s what we call travelling in style! We’re talking about Dom Perignon / Krug champagne coupled with Boston Lobster Thermidor (SQ Signature Lobster Dish), Wagyu Sirloin or even confit of duck leg for those in the mood for a French flair.
To do so, click on “Select/Change” for the meals,
As it was a midnight flight, a supper was provided, click on “Select Meal”
For the category, choose “Book the Cook” and you’ll be able to select your desired choice of food for the flight
For our flight, we had the Boston Lobster Thermidor, complete with a table setting (salt, pepper and champagne)…
Many people have asked what is the difference between “Classic Lobster Thermidor” and “Boston Lobster Thermidor”? Apparently, the Boston Lobster Thermidor is the full lobster version of the classic.
The big question though…was it as good as they say?
Every bit of it…
