After our banh cuon breakfast, we headed over to Cafe 4h for coffee – Vietnamese style – right on the streets!
About Cafe 4H (4h Ca Phe) Hanoi
Cafe 4H (aka 4h Ca Phe) is located at the corner of Hoe Nhai and Phan Dinh Phung streets. It also faces Vườn Hoa Vạn Xuân park directly offering not only views of the streets but also views of the greenery by the park.
Besides the street seatings, there are also indoor seatings both at level 1 and level 2…
The best seats are at level 2. There are outdoor seats that overlook the streets, plus, the chairs are pretty as well…
What We had at Cafe 4H (4h Ca Phe) Hanoi
This time, we ordered the Brown Vietnamese Coffee (Coffee with condensed milk) (30k VND – $1.7) as well as the White Vietnamese Coffee (Coffee with condensed and fresh milk) (35k VND – $2). The cool thing about coffee in Vietnam is that even at cafe joints like Cafe 4H, the prices are still rather affordable. While we were having coffee by the streets, we were approached by the shoeshine chap. As we were wearing the Onitsuka Tiger – non-leather shoes, we were wondering if the shoeshine men were able to do anything about it. They said they could. Hence, for 50k VND ($3 SGD), we handed our pair of shoes over.
Then, we saw something pretty strange.
The younger chap who took our shoes, approached another older shoeshine chap and had a minor discussion about our shoe. We wondered to ourselves if it was about whether our shoes could actually be “shined”. Then, we sort of monitored our shoes and saw that they were semi-cleaned and left by the roadside…
As we were first seated on the first floor outdoors, we headed indoors and wanted to check out the 2nd level views. At this time, the shoeshine chap returned our shoes to us…
On first glance, it seemed as though a stain on the tip of our shoes had disappeared. However, it was not. After the shoes dried up completely, the stain re-appeared again. The only good thing about our sending our shoes over was that the gum stain was actually cleaned up. Otherwise, it felt more like offering the chaps some business.

All in all, we had a great time chilling by Cafe 4H. The people watching at level 1 was great and the views from level 2 were pretty awesome as well. Whatever your choice, do spend some time chilling at your local cafe while visiting Vietnam! You’ll enjoy the experience!
