Cameron Highland Revisited: New Attractions for the Family!

Hobbitoon Village Cameron Highland

During our recent trip to Ipoh, we did a side trip to Cameron Highland which took about 2 hours by car. It must have been more than 15 years since we last visited Cameron Highland. In our minds, Cameron Highland was about strawberries, bee farms and rose gardens. However, during this trip, we did discover new attractions (and some old ones) and we’ll be sharing them in this post…

1. Hobbitoon Village Cameron Highland

Not to be mistaken with Hobbiton in New Zealand, Hobbitoon Village is Perak’s take of the famous Lord of the Rings and Hobbiton trilogies by Peter Jackson. Judging by the name, we’re not sure if any movie trademark has been contravened but we did enjoy the views even from outside the premise. At 40RM per person (i.e. $13SGD), Hobbitoon Village is definitely more affordable than the $89 we paid for the actual Hobbiton movie set tours in Matamata New Zealand. Helps to promote local tourism and gives locals (and Singaporeans) a chance to experience the Shire close to home. Not really sure how JRR Tolkien would feel about “Hobbitoon” though…🤔

The Sheep Sanctuary was our favourite attraction at Cameron Highland. At 12RM for entry to the Sheep Sanctuary (i.e. $4SGD), you’ll be able to have close encounters with animals on the farm such as sheep, lamb, ram and even alpacas! You’ll also be given a box of feed which staff on site will remind you not to show the box to the sheep because they’re so attuned to the white square feed boxes that they may go for it directly, rather than the feed itself! It’s really cool to pat the thick woolly coat of the sheep and because its so thick, the sheep actually does not have any reaction when you give it a pat. For photo taking, you may have to position yourself quite a bit because the sheep turns and goes after the feed and their focus is really not on the photos, so be patient. Lastly, do watch out for the steps, especially for the kids as we saw quite a few kids miss the steps which can be rather high for the younger ones.

3. Green View Garden Cameron Highland

Green View Garden is a little garden sanctuary in Cameron Highland where you can come close to nature and enjoy sightseeing among flora and fauna. Inside Green View Garden, there is also a nice little cafe known as Avant Cafe where you can enjoy Japanese and Asian-fusion inspired food while being surrounded in a garden atmosphere. For the kids, there’s also boat paddling as well as a mini petting zoo where kids can encounter goats, chickens, ducks and our favourite bunny rabbits! There’s also a shop that sells Avant Chocolate – touted as the best chocolate in Cameron Highland. There, we savoured one of the best strawberry ice cream we’ve had in a long time!

4. BOH Tea Garden Cameron Highland

What is a visit to Cameron Highland without visiting BOH Tea Garden? Cameron Highland is known for its cool temperate climate all year round, abundant rainfall and hours of sunshine which makes BOH’s tea one of the most consistently good product at Cameron Highland. Here, you’ll be able visit the first BOH’s tea factory and see the entire tea making process that has now been mechanised to harvest, process and roast the tea leaves. There’s also a BOH Cafe where you can savour delectable local delights and also some BOH tea ice cream creations. Next door, shop at BOH’s Tea Gift Shop where we bought the Cham (mix between coffee and tea), which we think is an excellent creation of the Hong Kong-styled Yuan Yang.

5. Many Other Attractions at Cameron Highland

Of course, there are many other attractions at Cameron Highlands such as the Bee Farm (which has grown so much in size!) as well as the many strawberry farms there. You can also stop by the city centre for lunch and buy some local produce as well. It was also during our lunch break that we had a mini issue with the lorry but after asking the staff of the restaurant to nudge the lorry a little, the engine could then be started! Thank the Lord!

After 15 years, we are still captivated by the natural beauty, fresh air and now, new attractions that visitors can head to in Cameron Highland. Other than the drive up, which can be a little windy (like Genting), we really enjoyed our day trip to Cameron Highland. If you have gone there recently, share more with our readers in the comments section below!
