On day 3 of our cruise to nowhere aboard the Quantum of the Seas, we started the morning as usual, at Deck 4’s La Pattiserie where we got the Iced Hazelnut Latte, double shot Cappuccino as well as the freshly squeezed orange juice. We also took a photo of the day’s activities on the Compass Cruise…
Quantum of the Seas Review Day 3 Breakfast at Main Dining Room
Instead of Windjammer this morning, we headed to American Icon to experience seated breakfast at Quantum of the Sea’s main dining room. We were surprised to this map of America (and highway routes) at its entrance, something that we had not noticed before…
Breakfast menu at Main Dining Room is almost the same each day. Here’s the Main Dining Room Breakfast Menu taken off the Royal App:
This morning, we had:
Granola Parfait. Choice of plain, blueberry or strawberry yoghurt layered with berries and topped with crunchy granola.
Breakfast Power Wrap. Egg whites, turkey, spinach, mushrooms and melted mozzarella cheese rolled up in a spinach wrap.
NY Bagel & Lox. A plate of smoked atlantic salmon, sliced cucumber, pickled onions, arugula, cream cheese served with your choice of plain or everything bagel.
The Classic Benedict. Two poached eggs, Canadian bacon and creamy hollandaise sauce on a toasted English muffin.
You can also choose a range of sides such as crispy bacon, smoked sausage, sauteed mushrooms, hash browns and corned beef hash. We’ve always enjoyed the hash brown, mushrooms and corned beef hash onboard. The main reason why we prefer Main Dining Room breakfast is because of the Classic Eggs Benedict. The egg yolks oozes like its supposed to and coupled with the mimosa and sides, makes for a great start to the day!
Quantum of the Seas Review RockWall The Key Program
As guests of The Key Program, we were given dedicated time at the Rockwall from 9am to 10am this morning…
Rock Wall is usually a first-come-first-served activity during cruise to nowhere with Quantum of the Seas. All you have to do is check when the Rock Wall opens and head over to join the queue. As we’re with The Key program this time round, there was a dedicated session for guests of The Key where we started queuing at about 8:55am. As the kids took on the first 2 columns of the wall, Tom took the 3rd column. Unfortunately, due to his increasingly obstructive waistline, he was unable to conquer the wall – albeit just one grip away from ringing the bell. So close, yet so far from eternal glory! 🤣
Tip for Rock Wall: Climb the wall like a ladder, placing your body weight on your legs instead of your arms!
To soothe Tom’s crushed spirit, we headed back to our room to wash up and catch a movie (Escape Room – Tournament of Champions) while having some pancakes and fruits from room service. These are also included in The Key – a perk which would otherwise cost $7.95USD + 18% gratuity per order…
This morning, we also planned for the Visual Trivia (Famous Places) at Music Hall, located at Deck 3. However, prior to the trivia, we headed to Harp and Horn for pre-lunch drinks of Shanghai Sling and Crown Royal Whiskey with Coke…
The Trivia itself was not too difficult though there were two that we couldn’t get. One of which was more of a slip of mind – Mount Rushmore (South Dakota). The other that we really didn’t come across, was the Nazca Lines in Peru – geoglyphs (large design or motif) made in the soil of Nazca desert in Southern Peru. The St. Louis Arch had an official name “The Gateway Arch”, much like the Chicago bean, “Cloud Gate”.
Quantum of the Seas Review Day 3 Lunch at Main Dining Room
After the morning trivia, we headed to Main Dining Room for Lunch. Here’s the Main Dining Room Day 3 Lunch Menu:
This time, we had:
Shrimp Risotto. Creamy arborio rice with aromatic chives and parmesan.
Caesar Salad (with shrimp).
Seafood Sandwich. Fried shrimp, cod and calamari with crisp coleslaw, tartar sauce and pickles on a toasted brioche bun, served with truffled french fries.
Korean Chicken. Golden breaded chicken served with a rich mustard mayo drizzle.
Spaghetti Bolognese. Always good to have a back up, in case the other mains didn’t work out.
Apple Blossom a la Mode. Warm apple tart served with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.
Seasonal Fruit Medley. A selection of fresh hand-cut fruit, for your daily dietary needs. 😁
For appetizers, we didn’t find the Shrimp Risotto tasty. The flavours didn’t really infuse into the risotto like it ought to and was merely covered over the grains. As for the entrees, the Korean Chicken was a disappointment. The chicken itself was not juicy and had a strange gelatinous texture on each bite – a little too chewy for our liking. The Seafood Sandwich though was ok – but felt like a combination of fruit leftovers combined into the brioche, which, was the saving grace for this dish. Fortunately, we ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese as a backup, in case the other entrees went south. Still as good as ever – al dente textures with generous and hearty meat sauce. Yum!
As for desserts, the Apple a la Mode was pretty good. The pastry was puffy and crusty all at the same time and the fillings were not too sweet. A great dessert to end off the meal. After lunch, we headed to Two70 Cafe, with the original intention to try out some of the alcoholic coffees. While there, we noticed that Two70 Theatre was opened, with its curtains fully drawn! Hence, we entered to take some instagrammable shots. Remember to search out the “cage seat” which makes for a great OOTD/Instagram shot!
Next door, we tried the Royal Delight (highly recommended) as Captain’s Call (hot drink) at the Two70 Cafe…
Prior to our next Trivia in the afternoon, we headed to the indoor pool bar for some drinks…
Around the ship, you’ll notice that there are some tables that are allowed for food and drinks (with masks off) while others are only intended for drinks (masks need to be worn when not sipping on drink). This time, we were seated at a food and drinks table by the pool. Hence, we headed up to Deck 15’s Seaplex Dog House to get some hot dogs to go with our drinks…
Though we didn’t get to try the Smoke House hotdog (still our favourite from Seaplex Dog House), we still enjoyed the juicy and plump bratwurst (foreground of the above photo). We’ve got to say that complimentary pizza from Sorrento’s and Hot Dogs from Seaplex Dog House are really quite good!
In the afternoon, we returned to Schooner Bar for Christmas Dingbats (2pm) and Visual Trivia: Food Around the World (3:30pm). As Schooner Bar only opens in the evenings, the venue is used for trivias and games in the afternoons.
For those who are not familiar with Dingbats, it is actually a cross between pictionary and word puzzle. For instance if the dingbat goes “PPPPPPs” on top of “Our Planet”, you’d guess the answer as “Peace on Earth”. We didn’t fare too well for Dingbats but was definitely a good time of mind exercise. The food trivia on the other hand was like a quiz. You’d be asked questions revolving around cuisines of the world.
Wine Tasting at Vintage Wine Bar Quantum of the Seas
To utilise the Deluxe Beverage Package, we thought of devising our own wine tasting tour. Since Vintage Wine Bar was opened, we decided to check out the menu and do a little wine tasting session of our own…
We did a little research and found the following general rules for order of wine tasting:
– Whites before reds
– Light bodied before full bodied (i.e. Pinot Gris before Chardonnay, Pinot Noir before Cabernet)
– Dry before sweet wines (i.e. Riesling before Sauvignon Blanc)
with recommended order as follows:
1. Sparkling
2. Dry Riesling
3. Pinot Grigio
4. Sauvignon Blanc
5. Chardonnay
6. Rose
7. Pinot Noir
8. Zinfandel
9. Merlot
10. Shiraz
11. Cabernet Sauvignon
This time, we tried the William Fevre 2018 Chablis, which is a type of Chardonnay, just that it is less fruity and slightly more acidic. We thought it was ok but would have probably tasted better with cheese or white meat. As for the reds, we tried the Clos Du Bois 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon and the Rosemount Estate 2018 Shiraz. Surprisingly, we enjoyed the Shiraz which had a full-bodied rich flavour as compared to the Cabernet – though the cabernet did have the smell of berries and a smooth texture. Taste wise, the Shiraz was preferred. Our self-initiated wine tasting on Royal Caribbean Cruise Quantum of the Seas, reminded us of our wine tasting experiences in Carmel and Napa Valley USA. Perhaps Royal Caribbean Cruise can consider adding an one-hour session for wine tasting and appreciation through a nominal fee of $10USD and making it complimentary as an additional option for guests of Deluxe Beverage Package. This could prove to be a hit!
One thing we found was that Reserves such as Kendall-Jackson, Vintner’s Reserve (877) and Andrew Peace Wines Winemakers Choice (879) (served at Main Dining Room) are not available at Vintage Wine Bar. Hence, do try those vintages when you’re wining and dining at Main Dining Room! Royal Caribbean Cruise has also numbered their wines. So it could be easier to say the number for your waiters to bring you the wines that you’d like to try.
We adjourned back to our room for a quick nap and saw the complimentary fruit plate for guests of The Key Programme. A really nice touch. At about 6pm, we adjourned to Bionic Bar once again for pre-dinner drinks…
If you had read our last post, you’d know that you’ll have to have a base liquor in mind when ordering drinks at Bionic Bar. With the base liquor, staff would recommend cocktails accordingly. Based on the ingredients, you can then decide if you’d like to try that cocktail or go on to the next recommendation. Bionic Blast (whiskey based) was a nice choice this evening. Woohoo was not too bad as well. Surprisingly, there were other guests that ordered the exact same drinks at the same time! Talk about popular cocktails at Bionic Bar…
Quantum of the Seas Main Dining Room Dinner
For dinner this evening, we had the following choices:
Roasted Tomato Soup. Topped with creme fraiche, garlic focaccia croutons and basil pesto.
Asian-style Pork Tacos. Roasted pork in a sweet-chili-soy sauce with sauteed vegetables in a soft bun.
Escargots a la Bourguignonne. As usual.
Steak Diane. Seasoned strip steak, served with a baked potato, grilled vegetables and a woodsy mushroom-cognac sauce.
Roasted Rack of Lamb. Baked yellow squash, carrots and creamy mashed potatoes.
Tagliatelle. Al dente flat pasta noodles tossed with fresh pesto, cremini mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and Parmesan cheese.
Tiramisu. Mascarpone Cheese, ladyfingers, espresso and a hint of Kahlua liquor
This evening, we were rather satisfied with the dinner at Main Dining Room. Of course, the escargots were as good as ever. The Steak Diane was the real delight this evening. Definitely a nice cut of the sirloin beef. Tender, juicy and flavourful when ordered with the done-ness of medium. The roasted rack of lamb was also excellent. No gamey taste with a nice fatty cut. Coupled with the reserve red wines, it was a perfect dinner. The Tagliatelle on the other hand needed more olive oil as the pasta were starting to stick together. Taste wise, the pestos and dried tomatoes came together rather well.
After dinner, it was time for our other dedicated activity for guests of The Key Program – Bumper Cars!
As it was the school holidays, Bumper Car rides were limited to only 1 time slot for each stateroom. With The Key, we were able to enjoy a full hour of bumper cars from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. During this time, we had 6 rounds of bumper cars which was awesome! We also met a boy, whom we call “Marc Jacobs” cause of the shirt he wore, who was so energetic! He even taught us how to dance. Of course, we had a great time of bumper cars together as well – which he aptly concluded the evening, saying, “You keep aiming me just now!”. 🤣
After bumper cars, we had another round of drinks before we caught Royal Caribbean Cruise’s headliner show – Sequins and Feathers. Definitely not suitable for kids due to the skimpy outfits worn. However, the remake of songs such as Man in the Mirror and Trouble were excellent.
