Edgewater Restaurant is the in-house restaurant of Millennium Hotel and Resort Manuels, located in Taupo, New Zealand. During our stay at Millennium Hotel Manuels, we made a reservation to try out the award-winning cuisine on offer at Edgewater Restaurant. Despite the higher prices here, we decided to give the restaurant a try and did not regret it!

For us, there were 2 main reasons why we wanted to dine at Edgewater Restaurant Taupo.
Firstly, the restaurant is situated right next to Lake Taupo. This gives diners a splendid view of the lake and surrounding scenery while dining in a beautifully appointed restaurant.
Secondly, it is well known that the food at Edgewater Restaurant is one of the best in Taupo. As we were craving for some steak, we decided to give the Rib-Eye In Bone Steak a try this time.
What We Had at Edgewater Restaurant at Millennium Hotel and Resort Manuels Taupo
After browsing through the menu of Edgewater Restaurant Taupo, we decided on
Braised Lamb Shank ($38 NZD)
Creamy mashed potato | smoked bacon and green peas | lamb jus
Rib-eye on the bone (500g) at ($68)
Served with house made truffle butter | Duck fat potato | 1 side dish | 1 sauce
Choice of sauce include: Red wine jus and mushroom sauce
Choice of sides include: Seasonal vegetables (garlic and herb butter), Garden salad (wholegrain mustard vinaigreete), Saute Mushroom (fresh herbs), Steak Fries (house made aioli), Duck fat potatoes (rosemary salt)
As the steak already comes with the duck fat potato, we decided to go with the healthy option of seasonal vegetables as the 2nd side. Along with the mains, we had the Merlot ($10) as well as a Hazy IPA ($14.5 – Tuatara Brewery).
Before long, our drinks arrived…
We enjoyed the Hazy IPA which was refreshing and citrusy – a great pre-dinner drink before the start of our dinner this evening. After about a 20 minute wait, our dinner of Rib-Eye On The Bone Steak ($68) and Braised Lamb Shank ($38) Arrived…
Let’s talk about the Rib-Eye On The Bone Steak first. It was AMAZING!
The portion of the rib-eye on the bone steak at Edgewater Restaurant Taupo was HUGE. Despite its size, the steak was well-grilled with the flavourful beef remaining tender on the cut. It had a slight chew on the bite yet was moist on each bite. A perfect piece of grill. To our surprise, we found the seasonal vegetables to be excellent as well. The grilled vegetables were fragrant and the carrot was sooooo sweet! The tomato on the side also burst in our mouths. Although Kate didn’t really like the “moisture” (aka too much redness), it is still recommended to have the steak prepared medium-rare for an excellent overall taste and texture. The sauce of red wine jus traditionally pairs well with the steak and the duck fat potatoes were good – although we could taste that not all pieces of the potatoes were covered with the duck fat (more duck fat pls! 😂)
The Braised Lamb Shank was also an excellent choice!
The lamb had no trace of gamey taste whatsoever. From the taste, we found that alot of effort must have gone into the pre-cooking preparations to make the meat this good and tender. Yes, the braised lamb was so tender and flavourful. Probably one of the best braised lamb shank that we’ve had in recent times. The mashed potato with the bacon bits provided a different depth and dimension to this side. Yummy!

Throughout the meal, we also found the waiting staff to be very attentive. They listened to our orders, made sure that we were good starting with our drinks and checking back on us during the meal as well. Coupled with the views of Lake Taupo and amazing meats at Edgewater Restaurant Taupo, the overall experience was simply shiok. If you’re in the vicinity of Lake Taupo and do not have any idea where to dine, make a reservation and check out Edgewater Restaurant – yes, remember to make reservations as the restaurant can indeed run full during peak dining hours!
