The Airbnb was a studio apartment that had a bathtub, water heating, a queen-sized bed, Netflix TV, dining area and a swing chair with awesome views of the flower fields nearby. The rooftop also has great views of Lake Ho Tay (West Lake Hanoi). The only downside is that there isn’t really much building and construction code. Hence, holes in the walls to run pipes and air con ducts was common. Thankfully, no insects or “Jerrys” entered our apartment during our stay.
In the evening, we headed out to El Loco Tapas Bar, just 5 minutes away by foot…
As we approached El Loco Tapas Bar, we saw an European sitting outside of the restaurant, smoking and enjoying a beer while the sun was setting. He stood up to welcome us as we walked into the restaurant. Apparently, he was the boss, who continued to sit where he was, enjoying the sunset. After the sun set, he gave some instructions to the staff, got on his bike and left the restaurant. Talk about retirement in style!
El Loco Tapas Bar Hanoi Menu
The menu of El Loco Tapas Bar was rather extensive…
You’ll be able to get cuts of ham, cheese as well as an assortment of tapas. For drinks, there was sangria as well. From the Spanish words used to the presentation of the food later on, we knew that the owner was definitely conversant with Spanish tapas. The experience of dining here, took us back to memories of having some of the best jamon that we’ve ever had in Madrid…
After browsing through the menu, we decided to go with
– Huevos rotos con jamon (Fried potato slices with serrano ham and fried eggs – 155k VND or $8.75SGD)
– Croquetas de pollo (Croquettes with chicken – 75k VND or $4.50)
– Sangria and agua de Valencia (95k VND each or $5.30)
What We Had at El Loco Tapas Bar Hanoi West Lake
After our orders were placed, we sat and enjoyed the sunset. As we were right by the window seat, it was simply beautiful to enjoy the colours and reflections off West Lake Hanoi…
Both the Sangria and Agua de Valencia were tasty though we still prefer sangria more. The Agua de Valencia was more like a mimosa of sorts. Champagne, vodka, gin and orange juice were its main ingredients. Refreshing. The Sangria on the other hand was pretty good as the fruits slices were fresh and the slight infusion into the red wine made a great drink with the tapas to come…
We enjoyed the croquettes with chicken very much. It had a slight crunch on the bite and within, it was oozing with cheesy, creamy, chickeny goodness. Just be careful of not being scalded by the sauce within. As for the huevos, it was a disappointment as we had expected more of an runny eggy dish. Turns out, the eggs and potatoes were stir-fried in a sense and topped with the ham. Though the taste was good, the presentation was a little lacking.
Nonetheless, the highlight of our evening at El Loco Tapas Bar was definitely the sunset over Ho Tay Lake…

All throughout the evening, we were the only customers in the restaurant. Perhaps because it was a Tuesday evening. Nonetheless, it was a very enjoyable evening to have sangria, tapas and of course, the beautiful sunset to welcome us into the second week of stay in Hanoi Vietnam. If you’re in the vicinity of Ho Tay Lake and wanting to try some Spanish food, El Loco Tapas is not bad of a venue. Get the sangria and perhaps some tapas along with breads and you’ll have a perfect evening ahead!
