If you’re wondering if the Firestone in Firestone Walker Brewing Company is of the Firestone Tires? The answer is yes! Adam Firestone and David Walker are brothers-in-law and they came together with an ambition to create great beers. Right off the bat, you’d think that the brewery may be just another “investment” of the rich and probably just riding on the fame of the Firestone Walker names (no, we do not know if Walker is of the Johnnie Walker fame). However, if you have tried the Double Barrel Ale (aka DBA), you’d quickly be a convert, just like us! 😉

As we started the tour, we were introduced to the sensory analysis room. Staff head over to have their drinks as part of the job! It turns out that they will be handed a “brew” and they will have to decipher the contents and their scores will be tabulated and displayed on a chart like a league table of sorts. If you’re not visiting the room enough, you’ll probably be “reminded” to visit a little more often 😉
It was also here that we learnt that the now famous 805 brew was originally named as a blonde ale, which didn’t go well with the guys. Nope, “blonde ale” doesn’t really click with “macho”. With a name change to 805 which actually represents an area code in the Monterey County, it suddenly became familiar and “macho”, making it an instant hit.

Close to the end of the tour, we were introduced to the famous Double Barrel Ale (DBA). At first, we thought that it was probably just another gimmick. Brewing in oak barrels? From UK? Sounds like a publicity stunt just at the sound of it. But there’s really more than meets the eye. You can only try the pure DBA at the brewery itself. It is not sold anywhere and because it is so expensive to produce, only a percentage of the pure DBA is used in the DBA sold in stores. Well, expensive because of the oak and that problems occur with brewing beer in oak which leads to a higher frequency of change for the barrels.
But having said all that, the pure DBA is magical. Definitely a first for us to taste smoky woody beer. Tasted that for whiskeys and wine but definitely a first for beer. Thank you Firestone Walker Brewery!

What better way to end the tour than to have more beers and some pub grub? We’ll leave you with some photos of the Taproom as well as the awesome brews that we had…
