On day 10 of our travels in Greece, we arrived at the island of Paros! We left Hotel Marinos and took a walk to the bus terminal at the port area. Before our bus ride, we had a breakfast of donut (1.2 euros), country sausage pie (2.5 euros) and cafe latte (1.5 euros). Thereafter, we bought our tickets from the bus terminal for 1.8 euros (1 way per pax)…
Moraitis Winery Paros Island Greece
One of the highlights of this trip to Paros island was a visit to one of the wineries here. As Moraitis Winery was the winery that “popped out” in Google when we searched for Paros Winery, we decided to give it a shot. After alighting from the bus terminal, Moraitis Winery was about a 10 minutes walk away…
As we were a little early, we sat outside the winery and enjoyed the breezy morning, beneath these beautiful overhanging vineyards. Reminded us of the sweet smelling overhanging vineyards in San Luis Obispo. While waiting, we also checked out the wines available and also decided on the wine tasting menu that we wanted – the 9 flight tasting for 16 euros. Prior to the pours, we politely informed that we would be sharing the tasting and they acceded to our request 🙂
As we were the first customers for the day, we were able to select wherever we wanted to sit. We chose a discrete corner where the decor was a little medieval with cobbled stones on the walls. Soon our wine connoisseur approached us and started to introduce us to our first wine, the Moraitis Estate Malagousia
We actually wrote our observations on the wine tasting sheet. The Malagousia is actually an important grape species to Paros (and Greece). It was only reintroduced to the island in the 70s. We found the taste to have slight peach taste, aromatic, smooth with a light aftertaste. Yum!
The next wine to be tasted was the Siloggi White. This has a 50% mixture of Malagoussia and Assyrtiko grapes. Apparently, the Assyrtiko survived the volcanic eruptions of Santorini and is regarded as one of the important grape species for Greece. To us, this tasted a little more intense, slightly sweeter but not as smooth as compared to the Malagousia. We were also presented with the complimentary plate of cheese and crotons. Perfect complement to the wine tasting session!
During the rest of the wine tasting session, we also tried the following wines
1. Moraitis Estate Malagousia (100% Malagousia)
– Aromatic, slight peachy, smooth, light aftertaste
2. Sillogi White (50% Malagousia/50% Assyrtiko)
– More intense than Malagouosia, fresh, slightly sweet but not as smooth
3. Moraitis Estate Assyrtiko (100% Assyrtiko)
– More intense grape and citrus taste, drier, light crisp and acidity
4. Paros White (100% Monemvassia)
– Fragrant, tropical and fruity aftertaste, native of Paros
5. Paros Oak Fermented (100% Monemvassia)
– Monemvassia survived a plant killing disease, found to be a resilient species.
– Citrus taste, smooth, bold flavours with light after taste
6. Moraitis Estate Rose (100% Aidani Mavro)
– Grape species resulted from a mutation from Aidani which only happens in Paros
– Intense grape aroma, bold flavours with slight crisp (not acidic)
7. Paros Red (75% Mandilaria / 25% Monemvassia)
– The Mandilaria has very strong flavours. Hence, the need to balance with the white Monemvassia
– Prune/sweet smells, spicy tannin taste, siap (not so smooth) with a slight dry/bitter aftertaste
8. Paros Reserve (75% Mandilaria / 25% Monemvassia)
– Similar to Paros except that it continues with 8 months in bottle.
– Similar bold aroma and flavours with slight tinge of spice and peppery aftertaste
9. Amma (50% Aidani Mavro / 50% Mandilaria)
– Late harvest done naturally. From soil, with nutrients from sun and from grape to barrel.
– 18 days of drying and 4 years in barrel – resembles the 18.4 m amma measurement in ancient Greece. Hence the name Amma.
– Strong red colour and can be served as a dessert itself
– Rich sweet smelling cherries, raisin and spice tastes, refreshing
Wine Tasting Tip: One of the ways to determine if a wine is good is whether it forms “tear drops” on the side of the glass (see picture above). This shows the pedigree of the wine. If it’s of poor quality, then a “plain sheet” will flow down instead of “tear drops” formation.
After our wine tasting session, we were allowed to tour the basement area to see the various wine barrels and wine cellars of Moraitis Winery. In total, we spent about 2 hours here. Totally worth it. If you’re here in Naousa Paros, remember to drop by Moraitis Winery for an educational incite into the world of wines in Greece!
Agioi Anargyroi Beach Naousa
From Moraitis Winery, we headed to Agioi Anargyroi Beach to chill for the afternoon…
Here, we laid our mats and took a nap, taking the sounds of the waves and feel of the breeze. As for the beach, although there are pebbles on the on the shore, there’s a portion in the middle of the beach that has a sandy entry. That’s also where the “organised beach” is, that is, you’ll be able to see beach chairs and umbrella. On top of that, as the beach faces east, the water feels warm in the afternoon (after a whole morning of warming by the sun). The exact spot that we camped at, was next to a wall. After 12pm, the wall provided a great shade for the afternoon sun.
At about 3:30pm, we headed back to the bus terminal to take the bus back to Parikia. Ticket is the same as 1.8 euros per person per direction. However, as the bus frequency is not that high, the 3:30pm bus ride had a lot of people waiting. Thankfully, we were able to catch our ride back to Parikia…
For dinner, we bought a pork pita, pork stick, chicken pita, chicken stick for 8.5 euros as well 2 pork gyros (5.2 euros). There were still alot of people at Lividia beach at 7:30pm on a Saturday when we went out to buy dinner.

In the evening, we chilled by our balcony in Hotel Marinos. There, we were able to enjoy the cool evenings and the sea breeze. What a relaxing day in Paros…
Stay tuned as we checked out the rest of Paros at the amazing Hotel Oasis!
