Besides Oia, there are many other “Santorini” towns that you can visit. Fira is one of them. We started off day 5 of our Greece travels in our cave house located in Pyrgos (another picturesque town in Santorini) and had DIY breakfast – courtesy of ingredients from the host…
After a sumptuous DIY breakfast made by Tom (complete with butter toasted bread on the frying pan), we headed out to top up our petrol before returning our car. For rental on cars on the Greek islands, we noticed that the cars were almost never at full – just return at the level that you rented at. We also learnt that we almost always “overpump” when we returned our car as we weren’t that good at estimating fuel consumption. Hence, it would be great if you can break up your refuelling into 5 euro denominations. This time, we pumped 20 euros (thinking that we drove quite a bit yesterday covering all the beaches, lighthouse and Oia). As a result, the fuel level shot pass the level that we rented at.
Santorini is also famous for its Assyrtiko wines because of the volcanic-rich soil. Hence, we also dropped by AB for a bottle of Assyrtiko (20 euros) as well as Ouzo (5 euros) – just to try out how the dry anise-flavoured aperitif tasted like. We then headed to Fira to return our car. Well, not before we got a little loss on the slopes and its one-way single car lanes. But that’s all good. We were able to find our hotel – Kafieris Apartments On the Cliffs a short walk up the slopes…
Relaxing Day out in Fira Santorini
Our receptionist – Pavlos, checked us in rather promptly. As check-in timing at Kafieris Apartment on the Cliff was 12pm, we left our stuff and ventured out to explore Fira!
As we left our hotel, we realised that there were many tourists taking photos nearby. It was here that we discovered another MUST-TAKE SHOT in Santorini – Virgin Mary Orthodox Church-Three Bells of Fira!
Turns out that this attraction is one of the reasons why tourists head to Fira. And it was located right next to Kafieris Apartment on the Cliff! Cool! We were also really fortunate to have our own photo taken by a professional photographer who was able to frame us right next to the church and angled in such a way that no shadows were cast upon us from people nearby. How did we know he was a pro? By the huge camera that he pulled out after he took our photo 😛
Thereafter, we continued south to take more pictures of the cliff and street views at Fira Santorini…
We also did a “touristy thing” by purchasing post cards and affixing local stamps before sending back home to our loved ones in Singapore. We were able to buy post cards for 1 euro and stamps for for 2.5 euros at the Hellenic post. At the post office, we used the spongy water thingy to wet our stamps but were told by locals that they usually “lick” the stamps. Well – that’s what we usually do as well…not sure why we did the spongy water thingy – probably cause its there 😛
For lunch, we headed to Dyonisos in Atlantis – a local restaurant in Fira. The reason why we chose Dyonisos was because of the Red Donkey signage that it placed outside its restaurant. This made us think that they served Red Donkey, a Santorini Brewing Company Beer – on draught. However, we were wrong. Only bottled ones were available…
Nonetheless, we were able to taste one of the Greek foods that we wanted to try – meatballs! The portion was generous and it tasted refreshing with the tomato-base sauce. One of the dishes that you ought to try when you’re in Greece. We also thought about joining the Greek Wedding Show at White Door Theater. In this show, you’re “invited” to attend a Greek Wedding, complete with bottomless wines, smashing of plates and shouting “Oppa!”. According to reviews, it seemed rather enjoyable. The downside was that the food reviews were bad as they were primarily a drama company and not a restaurant. Hence, we decided to give it a miss this time. If you’ve attended it, let us know more in the comments section below!
Chilling out at Kafieris On the Cliff – Fira, Santorini
Soon, it was time to check out our room at Kafieris on the Cliff…
The room was beautifully decorated. The light turquoise blue of the bedroom gave the “beach vibe” to the entire room. You’ll be able to watch cable TV and even have breakfast at the balcony of the room. One thing that we’ve learnt early on while travelling in Greece is that you are not supposed to flush toilet paper down then toilet bowl! Apparently, the sewage system was not originally designed for it and may cause chokes. After checking out our room, we headed to the rooftop for the highlight of our stay at Kafieris…
There’s a rooftop jacuzzi at Kafieris Apartment on the Cliff! However, the best part has got to be the views. One of the perfect place to view the sunsets in Santorini and to really observe the volcanic caldera of Santorini.
During our stay, there was an American couple who booked a couple of sea-facing rooms on the second floor. Hence, the vibe was rather lively. While we were chilling at the pool, the bridesmaids and bride came up to the rooftop to take some shots. Even the wedding gown had its own “featured shot” against the Santorini Caldera. After snacking on our pork gyros (2.8 euros each from Fira town), we went back to our room and rested till 6pm. Tom then headed out to get some coke/beer/water and Santorini Pizza (12.5 euros for medium sized one from Family Restaurant) to have our own little party for the Fira sunset…
