Greece Travel Itinerary Day 9: Exploring Naxos Old Town and Arriving at Paros Island

What we had at 1739 Terrasse Cafe Naxos

On day 9 of our travels in Greece, we slept in on the island of Naxos before heading out to explore the Old Town. Tom headed out to a bakery nearby and bought a spinach pie (2.2 euros) and chocolate croissant (2 euros). Both of which were HUGE. This was topped off with a cafe latte (2 euros). This, we enjoyed while watching Alpha TV – a Greek TV channel. It was here where we found out about this video…

Trifonas Samaras is a Greek celebrity hairdresser. During his holiday in the Maldives, he uploaded a video saying It’s Amazing, ah. It’s Fantastic ooh. while running along the beach. Then, it just became a sudden hit in Greece and he even had a MTV video with performances in morning shows (like the one we saw on Alpha TV)! Locals in Greece (even celebrities), took up the #amazingchallenge as well! :O

Visiting the Old Town of Naxos

We left at about 12pm to visit the Old Town of Naxos. Naxos Old Town is famed for its narrow path and intersecting buildings that form many arches in the town. It was said that pirates would land in Naxos often and the design of the town was to allow the locals to lose the pirates within this labyrinth maze.

While exploring the Naxos Old Town, we also got ourselves a little treat – chocolate orange ice cream (2.3 euros) before we continue onwards to Naxos Castle…

As we ventured on, we discovered a cafe – 1739 Terrasse Cafe. The building which houses the cafe was said to be built in the 3rd century. There, we had a freddo cappucino (3 euro) and Erdinger (500ml – 5.2 euros)…

After our little break at 1739 Terrasse Cafe, we continued shopping and getting lost in the Old Town of Naxos. There, we stumbled upon this cute Octopus brand of T-shirts

This time, we bought two matching turqoise couple T-shirts for 46 euros. The owner told us that she would try to make matching couple or parent/children combinations. After a little more strolling, we headed back to our Airbnb to rest. Thankfully, there was no other guests in the afternoon – therefore our host extended our stay for us till our ferry at 6pm.

Tip from Kate: Kate commented that if you’re travelling only for a short distance, you can just pay the minimal boarding ticket fare (ie no allocated seats). But if you’re travelling long distance, you should opt to have the air seats in the event that the open seats are no longer available. Although we booked the air seats, we have been sitting at the open deck thus far – as it was not the peak tourist season.

Marinos Hotel Paros Review

We arrived at Paros at 7pm and checked into the Marinos Hotel. The hotel was super clean and we were met with many locals. It was a refreshing change to say “Kalispera” (Good Evening) to the locals in the evening as we headed out as they were just chilling out in the common areas. One of the reasons why Kate chose Paros was also because of it being less touristy.

We were super satisfied with our room at Hotel Marinos. The room and toilet was clean and there’s an outdoor balcony where we chilled out a little. Thereafter, we headed out to the local supermarket to get some local Volkan beers (4 bottles for 8.5 euros). Thereafter, we headed to Cactus Restaurant for a change in cuisine for dinner – Mexican!

One of the reason why we chose Cactus was because of its guacamole. The whole dinner came up to be 25 euros but we’ve got to say that the guacamole was superb! Reminds us of the best nachos we’ve had EVERMacho Nachos from Elvez Philadelphia. Otherwise, the fried potato was a little salty while the mushroom though creamy and flavourful, was a little expensive. While paying for our bill, the lady boss noticed from our accent that we’re from Singapore. Apparently, she’s from England and had a Singaporean friend who opened a restaurant in Paros. She says that he now has a Fish and Chips restaurant in Singapore. For the first time, our accent was recognised overseas! The Singaporean identity is growing! 🙂

As we bought the bottle cap Volkan beer, we went for a walk around the old market square in search of a bottle opener. But they were all a little too ex (4 euros and up). So we got a coke instead (1.2 euros) before retiring to our room to have Ouzo with coke while watching iRobot (yup, that Will Smith futuristic robot movie).
