In our last couple of posts, we’ve covered Thai Soul and Colony Clubhouse & Grill at Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty. To round up our reviews of the restaurants of Grand Hyatt Kochi, we visited Malabar Cafe for authentic Kerala Cuisine!
About Malabar Cafe @ Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty
Helmed by Chef Latha, the concept of Malabar Cafe stems from “mum’s home-cooked meals” with South Indian flavours. 5 lady chefs cooks up the “mother’s taste” at this restaurant and the chefs insist on creating bona fide local flavours by using only hand-ground spices that are created in-house. All masalas for fish, mutton and chicken are all created in-house. Meaning, you can’t get them anywhere else! We also found out that you are able to customise the tastes and because of that, there are many returning guests to Malabar Cafe. In fact, the Malabari cuisine found here are so well-liked that Chef Latha’s own line of masalas could be out sooner than we think! 😛
Lunch at Malabar Cafe Kochi
During our lunch visit, we were blown away by the curries & masalas that are created in-house as well as the dessert spread (for Kate, that is…)
In Kerala, the most famous food has got to be the Karimeen Fry. Pearl spot fish, also known as Karimeen is considered a delicacy in Kerala. We’ve learnt that because of its flat shape, it can hide between rocks along the backwaters of Kerala. Hence, it takes some skill to catch this prized fish by hand! To suss out the culinary mastery of chefs at Malabar Cafe, we ordered the Karimeen fry and were thoroughly impressed. The fish was fresh and sweet while the spices complemented but did not overpower the taste of the fish. Perfectly executed.
Try out the fried drumstick (seen in the middle of the plate) as well. It may not seem like much (or may even look dry on the outside) but you’ll be surprised on the first bite. Tender chicken with juices flowing through the well-marinated, spice-infused meat. Yum!
Lastly, try out the Curry Mutton Dosai – tender mutton covered in a fluffy eggy blanket. Definitely a hit among patrons at Malabar Cafe.
Other food choices include the salad bar as well as a “live” Shawarma station where your meat wraps are freshly prepared. But of course, the other highlight for us was definitely the desserts section!
THERE WERE SO MANY CHOICES OF DESSERTS TO CHOOSE FROM!!!
Key lime meringue pie as well as the rich chocolate cakes (chocolate moist cake and banana decadence) were among our favourites. A wide selection of teas as well as choices of coffee made this portion of our meal that much more enjoyable. The desserts at Malabar Cafe can practically stand as a meal by itself!
Grand Hyatt Kochi Breakfast @ Malabar Cafe
Breakfasts are also served at Malabar Cafe. The thing we like about this restaurant is its space and choice of food. Because of that, you’ll be certain to find food from this international selection that would suit even the pickiest of taste-buds.
Our favourite includes banana cake and pan-au chocolat from the pastry section as well as the egg appam. The egg yolk was still runny when the appam was served. This reminded us of an Indian version of an Eggs Benedict. Nice!
To top it all off, right off the veranda of Malabar Cafe, you’ll get expansive and unblocked views of Vembanad lake. We enjoyed the views, the leisurely breakfast, complete with some delicious masala chai tea. Idyllic.
We now leave you with a video review of our experience at Malabar Cafe, Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty.
