In addition to the Singapore Travel Series, we’re starting the MRT Escapades series where we introduce things to do and what to eat near the various MRT stations in Singapore! This time, we took a walk along the North East MRT Line and visited Potong Pasir and Kovan MRT Stations…
What to Eat Near Potong Pasir MRT Station
Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery
Located about 8 minutes walk away from Potong Pasir MRT is Bee Cheng Hiang’s flagship store and its bistro – Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery. If you’re in the vicinity and would like to try some really creative dishes, Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery is the place to head to. Here, you’ll find the traditional bakkwa and pork floss fused with well-known dishes such as katsu, pizza and even the aglio olio (our absolute favourite!)

What to Eat Near Kovan MRT Station
Ng Kuan Chilli Pan Mee
Located just 2 minutes walk away from Kovan MRT, you’d be able to find the Ng Kuan Chilli Pan Mee…
We went for the Ng Kuan Chilli Pan Mee with fried chicken as the fried pork was sold out for the day. To be honest, we were rather disappointed with the rendition at Ng Kuan Chilli Pan Mee. Although it had a novel ingredient (fried sliced garlic) that went quite well with the chilli, the undercooked texture of the noodles as well as an overcooked (less than runny) egg, affected the overall taste. The fried chicken was also not hot when served. A letdown. Probably cause we visited during off-peak hours? During peak hours, long queues can be observed.

Lim Peh Carrot Cake / Fried Yam Cake
Further down, about 4 minutes walk away from Kovan MRT station, you’ll arrive at Lim Peh Coffeeshop. There’s quite a few good food over here, including minced meat noodles, fried hokkien noodles, Punggol Nasi Lemak and Kantha’s Indian Cuisine. But what really caught our eye this time was the Fried Yam Cake…
We’ve seen (and tasted) many fried carrot cakes but fried yam cake? This was probably our first and we weren’t disappointed. The uncle at Lim Peh fried yam cake took some time to fry and serve up our fried yam cake. Working in the relatively spacious kitchen of his, we saw that he was enjoying his craft and putting in his heart to fry this awesome plate of fried yam cake…
There were 2 different chilli that was served with the fried yam cake and both versions brought out a different aspect of this dish. The yam could be clearly tasted while the combination with the fried egg and chilli made this a really satisfying dish.
