There are actually so many things to do and attractions in Naxos. If you’re wondering what are some of the top attractions in Naxos, fret not! In this post, we’ll share the restaurants, scenic spots and attractions on the 10th largest island of Greece – Naxos!
Naxos Attractions #1: St. George Beach Naxos
Having travelled to many beaches across Greece, we’ve come to the conclusion that St. George Beach is probably the best beach in Greece. St. George Beach checks out all the criteria of being the perfect beach. Due to its location within a bay, the waters at St. George Beach is calm. These are the reasons why St. George Beach is also a family-friendly beach. In addition, the formation of a spit allows for shallow waters – 20 metres out! As an “organised beach”, you’ll be able to rent beach chairs and umbrellas for 15 euros – for the entire day! Lastly, fine sand and clear blue waters round up the pros of St. George Beach – the best beach in Greece!
Naxos Attractions #2: Vallindras Kitron Distillery @ Halki Village Naxos
Heading out of the port of Naxos, there are a few spots to head to. This time, we dropped by Halki Village. Besides the feel of being an old village, Vallindras Kitron Distillery is also an attraction in Halki Village (Naxos), not to be missed. Our favourite is the white version (33% alcoholic content) kitron alcohol – aromatic and tasty.
Naxos Attractions #3: Filoti Naxos
Filoti is another village we visited in Naxos. There are many instagrammable spots in the hidden alleyways. In addition, people watching at one of the cafes on the main street can be a relaxing experience. This time, we tried the Naxos Cherry Waffle, while watching the grandfathers having their leisurely morning gatherings.
Naxos Attractions #4: Rotonda Restaurant Naxos – For Best Views of Naxos
For the best views of Naxos, many locals would recommend visiting Rotonda Restaurant. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy unparalleled and unblocked views, all the way out to sea. Choice of cuisine here include Traditional Greek and Western. We ended off the meal with a complimentary glass of raki from the restaurant. Yum!
Naxos Attractions #5: Cross Roads Naxos – Sea Views to the North & South
Cross Roads is a place in the middle of Naxos where 2 major roads literally meet, resulting in a “cross road”. There’s a small little church that marks this cross road as well. The unique thing about this scenic view point is that you’ll be able to enjoy sea views both to the north and to the south. An unique scenic spot.
Naxos Attractions #6: Mikri Vigla Beach Naxos
Mikri Vigla Beach is a great spot for water sports such as wind surfing and para-sailing. This time, we visited Victoria Cafe to chill out by the beach. We even played Giant “Connect-Four” available here. Tom won!
Naxos Attractions #7: Avali Restaurant Plaka Beach Naxos
Plaka Beach is another popular beach destination in Naxos. As we had already spent an entire day at St. George Beach, we decided to just chill up at a restaurant/pub by the beach. This time, we chose Avali. Here, we were able to grab a couple of drinks and read our books as we enjoyed the views from Avali Restaurant – set atop the cliff.
Naxos Attractions #8: Old Town of Naxos
Take a walk around the old town of Naxos. Besides the instagrammable cobbled streets, you’ll notice that the streets are really narrow and there are arches formed between buildings. Sometimes, you may even be lost within its streets. Apparently, in the old days, pirates descended upon Naxos quite frequently. Hence, the maze-like design of its street, was to confuse the pirates and to lose them in the event of a chase through town.
Naxos Attractions #9: Naxos Castle
At the top of Naxos, you’ll find the old Naxos Castle. You’ll be able to enjoy great views from here. There’s also a church next to the premise, also known as the Old Church at Kastro.
Naxos Attractions #10: Apollo Temple Naxos
Next to Naxos Port, you’ll notice an unmistakably iconic structure – Apollo Temple of Naxos. Its shape looks like that of a photo-frame. This is also a reason why many visitors use it to “frame” the sunset of Naxos within. A very crowded location at sunsets.
Naxos Attractions #11: Meze Meze Restaurant Naxos
If you’re not sure where to eat for dinner, head to Meze Meze restaurant, located along the coastal walk of Naxos port area. Because of its competitive price, Meze Meze is constantly flowing with costumers. During the time we visited, Meze Meze was bustling while other restaurants were half or less than half full. This also means that the food is always fresh. Our favourite was the Pork Chop (huge portion!) and any of the whole grilled fish. Fresh and sweet.
Naxos Attractions #12: 1739 Terrasse Cafe Naxos
For a scenic spot in Naxos port area, head to 1739 Terrasse Cafe. Views of Naxos (both city and sea) are unblocked and the drinks are rather affordable. A great venue to chill out and spend a leisurely day out in Naxos.
