We were watching a food programme on CNA and towards the end of it, chefs would recommend their favourite food places in Singapore. This time, the New Mahamoodiya Restaurant was recommended for its prata. If a local food joint is recommended by a chef, we’d want to check it out…

About New Mahamoodiya Restaurant
Located opposite the Simpang Bedok hawker centre, New Mahamoodiya Restaurant is throwback in time with its old school settings and laid back vibes. As with most local joints, we chose our seats and sat down. Almost immediately, a server came along and asked for our orders.
Unfortunately, as it was our first time here, we did not really know what we should order. Hence, we asked for the menu. A response that immediately indicated that we were “newbies”… 😅

New Mahamoodiya Restaurant Prata Menu
After opening up the menu, we zoomed in on the “Famous Prata Items” section. This is where the more popular items are listed:
Prata (Kosong aka plain) for 2 – $2
Prata Egg – $1.60
Prata Cheese – $2.70
Coin Prata (Chicken/Mutton) – $7/$8
Roti John – $5
To test the authenticity of a prata shop, you’d always try out the “usual suspects”. This time, we ordered the the plain prata, the egg prata as well as the cheese prata. Of course, New Mahamoodiya Restaurant is also known for its coin pratas – a novelty thought up by the next generation at New Mahamoodiya. If you have tried coin pratas at New Mahamoodiya, let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Plain Prata, Egg Prata and Cheese Prata Review at New Mahamoodiya Restaurant
First off, the plain prata. Well…not as great as they say. True, it was crispy on the outside due to the pseudo “deep fry” technique that is used. Where the dough is pan fried with a generous dose of oil. However, it was a little too crispy and the inside was crispy as well. Unlike the preferred “crisp-on-the-outside and fluffy-on-the-inside” for a great prata. The egg prata was much better as the egg gave that softer texture on the inside of the prata. Lastly, the cheese prata OOOOZED of cheese. Still a tad too crispy on the inside but think of it as chip dipped in cheesy goodness. Love it.

Concluding Thoughts on New Mahamoodiya Restaurant
Nearby, we took a short walk to the Bedok Reservoir Park…
There, we found out that we have a piece of the historic Berlin Wall in Singapore?! We enjoyed the stroll around Bedok Park Reservoir and also checked out the locals doing their fishing by the reservoir.

To conclude, we love the vibe at Simpang Bedok and if you have a crave for pratas, New Mahamoodiya is a great 24 hours joint to visit. Perhaps, you can ask for a “less crispy” version of the pratas when you order? This would result in a great crisp yet fluffy prata that foodies love!
