In 2013, we visited New World Park Food Court to try out the various Penang Hawker Food. From our photos and what we recalled, it was pretty deserted in those days…

About New World Park Food Court Penang
We also got to try out the Penang Wanton Mee (RM 4) and Penang Curry Mee (RM 4)…
This time, we returned for a quick bite but were pleasantly surprised that it is so much more crowded than before…
There were alot of locals, office workers and some tourists like ourselves, trying out the local Penang Hawker Fare. Besides the obvious increase in foot traffic, we also found that there were alot more choices to choose from. The entire New World Food Court was also very well maintained with tables cleaned whenever patrons leave. This time, we returned on recommendation to try out the Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng (aka Famous Penang Mee)…

Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng New World Park Review
First off, the prices. This plate of Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng costs 10RM which translates to about $3SGD (1SGD to 3.3 MYR in 2022). In 2013, the noodles that we ordered for 4RM translates to about $1.6SGD (1SGD to 2.5 MYR in 2013). This meant that prices had increased significantly during this period – though there were still noodles sold at 6RM today.
As for the Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng at New World Park Food Court, it was actually pretty good. Let’s talk about the presentation. This time, we ordered the chicken version at 10RM (the other choice was sotong). As you can see, the mee goreng is fried and placed OVER the fried chicken that is hidden underneath. So you may think that they have forgotten about the chicken – no, they havent. On top of the noodles, they added freshly chopped lettuce and a small slice of lime to add colours to this otherwise, orangey dish. A good idea to make it enticing for the patrons.
Next, as we dug into our first bite, there was a smorgasbord of flavours bursting in our mouths. There was the slightly moist texture coated with tangy and sweet flavours which the egg amalgamated perfectly. With the lime, it was so appetizing! As for the choice of chicken, though it had a great taste of spice fried along with it, the chicken texture was not crispy. Also, the part that was given to us, was boney. So perhaps, we should try out the sotong version the next time round. If you have tried Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng fried with sotong, let us know more in the comments section below.

New World Park Penang Hokkien Mee Review
2 doors down from Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng, we saw a photo of a street hawker plying the Penang Hokkien Mee trade. Looks like it was taken in the 1970s/80s. This probably meant that the stall has been around for a pretty long time and to be surviving for such a long time, the food has got to be good – at least, we thought to ourselves.
It is also worthy to note that “Hokkien Mee” takes on a totally different meaning in different locations. If you refer to “Hokkien Mee” in Singapore, it refers to either the tze char version fried with dark sauce and pork lard or our favourite fried hokkien noodles…
But if you say “Hokkien Mee” in KL, it usually refers to the pork lard-ladened version that is fried with dark sauce and thick noodles…
But here in Penang, “Penang Hokkien Mee” refers to the soup version that is served in a potent broth boiled with pork and prawn – usually simmered over many hours, to achieve a consistent, flavourful taste…
This time, we chose the pork ribs version (also at 10RM) but is also served in the same flavourful broth. One thing that is different from the “Hokkien Prawn Noodles” in Singapore, is that, instead of chili powder being used to spice up the flavours, a chili paste is served on the spoon. After the chili is mixed in, the effect achieved is pretty much similar to that of the chili powder. Not too spicy, so you don’t have to worry too much about it. The broth itself had the umami taste which “forced” us to drink up every last drop of this flavourful mix while the pork ribs were off-the-bone tender. However, the prawns looked miserly small. Overall, we enjoyed this dish, though Kate said that we could taste the pork’s original taste (aka 猪肉原有的味道)😅

All in all, we enjoyed the return to New World Park Food Court. There were many other stalls that we wanted to try such as the yam rice, the chee cheong fun, char hor fun and of course the curry mee and wanton mee. But, we had to save some space for the other foods that we wanted to try at our next destination.
