Our craft brew hopping experience in Jacksonville continues at Aardwolf Brewing Company. Having visited Bold City Brewery, Engine 15 Brewery & Kitchen as well as Ruby Beach Brewing Company, we were starting to formulate an idea of the craft brew scene in Jacksonville. Still, we had to visit more breweries, including Aardwolf to find out more…
About Aardwolf Taproom and Brewery
Located at Hendricks Avenue in the heart of Jacksonville Florida, Aardwolf Brewing Company is housed in what was once an ice factory (South Jacksonville Utilities) built in the 1920s. The company formed by the partnership of Michael Payne (Master Brewer) and Preben Olsen (Entrepreneur) for their love and passion of craft beers. Together, we brings fuse the historic past of the building and roots of Jacksonville with their passion to deliver excellent craft beers to beer enthusiasts in Jacksonville (or visitors like us! 😝)
Once inside, you’ll see the craft beer menu on the wall right at the end of the hall. Here you’ll find the beers available for the day as well as the prices for a 16 oz or 4 oz drink.
Just like Ruby Beach Brewing Company, Aardwolf Brewing Company also does not serve food on its premise but collaborates with Chancho King Food truck where you can bring food from the food truck outside into its premise to be consumed together with the craft beers.
There were also outdoor seats. As we were visiting towards the end of January, the weather was still a little cold out but we can imagine that this outdoor space would be so crowded and full of life during the summer months. Fairy-lights – just like how Kate loves it! 🤪
Just like Engine 15 and Bold City, Aardwolf Brewing Company also has its own series of merchandise that includes shirts, caps and beanies among others.
What We Had at Aardwolf Taproom and Brewery
There is a reason why Belgium Pale Ale, affectionately known as BPA is the house favourite at Aardwolf Brewing Company. We tried a pint at $5 and found it to be a light ale that is smooth and probably a good match for most food. Perhaps Mexican and Asian cuisine which has a little bit more spices within. The Belgium Pale Ale (BPA) is definitely one of our favourites at Aardwolf.
Similar to Engine 15, the flight of beers at Aardwolf Brewing Company is priced per glass. You’ll grab a flight from the counter along with a marker and fill up the names on the rims of the flight. The staff will fill up accordingly and bring it back to you. This time we had:
1. Alvin’s Coffee Brown ($2). The description includes “brown ale with catbird coffee”. The ale does have a nice coffee taste but not as robust as a stout. Definitely a good entry to the brown ale category.
2. Helles Other People ($2). This is a German-styled lager. A light lager with some semblance to the Oktoberfest helles.
3. Icon of Sin ($4). This a sour with cherries. A cross between a post and a cider which Kate liked. Aged in large wooden oak barrels to give that woody aroma and it also has a relatively high alcohol content at 6%.
4. Hop Oddity ($4). The highest alcohol content that we had this evening at 7%, Hop Oddity is a hazy IPA with a combination of Citra and Amarillo hops. We loved the hoppy flavours on a light textured beer along with its citrusy notes that we had “hopped” for.

After visiting Aardwolf, we can understand why it was so crowded during the weekday evening that we were there. You could get decently priced sandwiches at the food truck next door and complemented with beautifully crafted beers inside. While the staff over the counter was not as friendly as the establishments that we’ve visited so far, they do serve one of the best BPAs around. Have you been to Aardwolf Brewing Company?
