On day 5 of our travels in Penang, we started with a sumptuous breakfast at Prestige Hotel Penang…

Breakfast at Prestige Hotel Penang The Glasshouse
The breakfast of Prestige Hotel Penang is served at the Glasshouse located next to the lobby at level 1. In addition to the buffet spread, you can also have ala carte orders of
– Eggs / Omelette
– Truffled Eggs Benedict
– Japanese Udon
– Oatmeal Bowl
Once you’re seated, the staff will ask for your choice of beverage. We’d usually go with latte which was quite good. This morning, we ordered the Udon and Truffled Eggs Benedict…
The surprise find for us was actually the Japanese Udon. It was a simple dish, udon in seaweed soup served with Japanese fish cake and some other condiments. You could taste the light but distinct seaweed in the soup while we also enjoyed the texture of the udon. We then overheard the next morning that udon could not be served as the machine was out – indicating that the udon could very well be made in-house. Good stuff.
As for the Truffled Eggs Benedict, the presentation was good. Egg yolk was flowy. But we couldn’t really taste the truffle in it. Nonetheless, it was a decent rendition of an Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise sauce.
As for the rest of the buffet, it had a good variety ranging from Asian to Western and even something local such as the soy bean milk and kueh kuehs. Particularly enjoyed the attentive service where the staff will clear our plates and get our drinks regularly.
After breakfast, we headed out in search of our 2nd breakfast. Afterall, Penang is a foodie’s paradise right? Enroute, we took in the sights of the Penang heritage old town of George Town and as well as the street art that is sprinkled throughout the city. We also found a new bread at Family Mart known as Peach Melon Pan, sold for 2.90RM.

Brunch at Wai Kei Cafe
Eventually, we arrived at Wai Kei Cafe, a venue recommended to us for its char siew. This time, we ordered a char siew and roast pork for 2 pax at 17RM. Coke was 3RM. To be honest, the meal was quite disappointing. The char siew had caramelising but it was inconsistent as only some parts of the meat had it. The gravy was also cold. Although the price was cheap and there’s an old school vibe to the premise, we wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re in the vicinity, skip it and head right over to Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay nearby directly instead…

Kueh Kuehs from Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay
As we walked by the carpark to Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay, we were directed by an uncle sitting in the alley towards its entrance. We did not ask him about it but probably due to the large numbers that visit, he deduced that we were visiting Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay and showed us the way there. We entered through the back of the premise and walked past its kitchen before entering into the seating areas within. On the way, we could see many steamers and staff rolling out all the various colours of koays and were pretty excited to try them.
If you’re trying out the kueh kuehs from Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay, do note that the portions are really small. Bite-sized. Just like the canapes for afternoon tea. However, they are also priced accordingly. For instance, a small piece of Kueh Talam was 0.60RM while an Ang Ku Kueh was 1.50RM. So prices were very reasonable. We took away the kuehs and looked for an area nearby where we could sit down under a shelter as it had started to drizzle…
Eventually, we found a public space that looked new with shelter and settled there to taste our kuehs. Turns out, the area was an archaeological park and the space that we were in was the old Sia Boey market that had been recently refurbished just before COVID struck. The kuehs from Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay were pretty good. Tasty and not too sweet. We were very much rejuvenated and went on to our next destination this afternoon – Penang Hill. From Old Sia Boey Market, we took a short walk to Pragin Mall and from there, we managed to get a grab ride (13RM) to the foot of Penang Hill where we were to take the funicular up to take in the sights over Penang…

Views and Afternoon Tea from Penang Hill David Brown’s Hilltop Garden Restaurant
The cost of the funicular ride was 30RM per person for a return trip. While buying the tickets, the staff would ensure that only 1 person from the party would be entering the queue to get tickets for the rest of the party. This is to prevent unnecessary overcrowding. Not a bad idea. Also at the entrance of the funicular, you can find several restaurants that sells bubble tea, breads and even fast food restaurants like A&W and MarryBrown.
After handing over your tickets to the staff for the funicular ride, there’ll be the usual touristy, “green screen” photos. We skipped that and entered into an exhibition that tells you about the engineering feat behind the construction of the funicular while looking for a vantage point atop Penang Hill.
The ride up to Penang Hill was only about 5 minutes. Most of the views were blocked by the natural forests around during the ride so a video up would only make sense if you manage to snag the seats at the lowest carriage of the funicular (applies for both ways up and down). While trying to shoot a video on the way up, as we were seated in the middle, we could only film vegetation that passed us. Not a sight to take in. However, the views over Penang awaits when you reach the last station at the top of Penang Hill…
Once at the top of Penang Hill, there will be touts that asks if you would want to enter the Little Village. There’s really no need to unless you have kids as we found the best views from Penang Hill are at the back of Gallery @ Edgecliff. We also took a walk around Penang Hill and went to the entrance of The Habitat, an eco-tourism discovery centre that is nestled on the edge of a virgin forest, offering unique rainforest experiences especially to nature lovers. As the entrance fees was a little steep at 60RM, we gave it a miss. But on another day if we had not planned for the afternoon tea at Penang Hill, this might be an attraction that we would visit.
As afternoon tea at David Brown’s Hilltop Garden Restaurant only starts at 3pm, we decided to have some drinks at the Sky Terrace first. This time, we had the Mojito (42RM) and Shady (16RM) which were pretty expensive by local standards. However, the views were amazing. Sky Terrace probably has the best unblocked views while sipping on a cocktail at Penang Hill.
During our visit, Sky Terrace was playing some 60s/70s British tunes that we were unfamiliar with. Surprisingly, a young couple came along and sat next to us and the lady (probably in her 20s) was humming along to the tunes. Kate and I stared wide-eyed at each other. In fact, both Sky Terrace and David Brown’s Hilltop Garden Restaurant are operated by the same establishment. So when it was 3pm, we just had to head up another flight of stairs and we reached the venue for the afternoon tea…
The afternoon tea set at David Brown’s Hilltop Garden Restaurant was 118++RM. The restaurant is nestled in a tranquil garden setting with birds singing above the trees. One of these birds even came up close, interacting with the guests and posing for photos. This explains the small little crowd that gathered here…
The afternoon tea set comes with 1 choice of tea – this time we chose peach and passion fruit tea. Both guests had to have the same tea and coffee was not included. There is a nice 3-tier presentation where you’ll be able to enjoy sandwiches, sliders, cakes, puffs, fruits and macarons.
The puff was particularly good with fresh cream that was not too sweet. It even came topped with gold flakes. Decadent. The rest of the items were good as well. The scones were warm and the fresh cream was well…fresh. The crab canape was good as well. Thank the Lord, the rain had subsided and we even got to enjoy a little bit of sunshine as we chilled in the cool 24 degrees temperature atop Penang Hill.
*All prices excludes taxes which are currently 10% for service tax and 6% for SST in Malaysia
