On day 6 of our travels in Penang, we started the day with ala minute breakfast and buffet from Prestige Hotel Penang
This morning, we tried the bee hoon soup with ling ling juan (fried beancurd skin) as well as the soy bean milk. We also discovered some old school biscuits and kueh kueh in the buffet spread too…
After the hearty breakfast, we went to the Kimberly Street area and strolled through the old precincts before arriving at Roti Bakar for our 2nd breakfast of the day…

Hutton Lane Roti Bakar
Today’s activity was to stroll around the area of Chow Rasta Market and try out the various recommended eateries here. Our first stop was Hutton Lane Roti Bakar. This time, we ordered the Roti Bakar Georgetown with ice kopi that came up to 7RM. The set comes with two grilled (instead of toasted) Roti Bakar and two half boiled eggs. The bread was nicely crisp on the outside yet fluffy within. Use the bread and dunk it into the soft boiled eggs to get an exquisite taste that is unique to Singapore and Malaysia. We also loved it that the roti bakar was spread with the old school saltish planta butter. Memories from childhood welled up with each bite. Shiok!
Around the vicinity of Chow Rasta Market, you’ll also be able to find the famous Ais Tingkap Penang – a mixture of rose syrup with basil seeds (sirap selasih) topped with coconut flesh and shaved ice. As we were heading for another dessert place, we gave it a miss time. However, if you have tried the Ais Tingkap Penang, do let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

Woong Kee Beancurd Penang
Woong Kee Beancurd originated from Ipoh but you can also find an outlet here near Chow Rasta market in Penang. Woong Kee Beancurd is unique in that there is a variety of flavours of the sugar syrup that can be added to your beancurd. Unlike usual beancurd stalls that just have the usual “sweetener” sugar syrup, you’ll be able to find flavours such as osmanthus, chrysanthemun, rose and blue flower sugars here. This time, we chose the beancurd along with osmanthus sugar and glutinous rice ball. As we saw that the carrot soy milk had a beautiful pastel pink colour, we ordered one as well. The total came up to 7.9RM.
First off, the beancurd has the texture of the silken tofu that Singaporeans are used to by now. The osmanthus sugar syrup does had to the “chic” factor and reminded us of the osmanthus dessert at Tim Ho Wan. Will definitely go for the osmanthus-flavoured sugar the next time round too. As for the glutinous rice balls, they were so delectably chewy on the outside. Just as good, if not better than Ah Balling in Singapore. Lastly, the carrot soy milk was not too sweet with hints of carrot. Enjoyed every bit of this visit!
After checking out the foodie joints at Chow Rasta Market, we headed to Pragin Mall nearby via this interconnecting overhead bridge…
During our visit to Pragin Mall, we found that many shops had closed down due to the effects of COVID-19 on business over the past 3 years. Most of the massage places had also closed down. Nonetheless, Kate managed to do her manicure here for 55RM while Tom did his haircut for 35RM. There was also an ongoing sale at Sketchers where Tom bought a pair of walkers for half off at 180RM at 1st Avenue.
After our little R&R at Pragin Mall and 1st Avenue, we headed to the Top Penang…

The Top Penang and Top View Restaurant Penang
There are actually two ways to get from Prangi Mall to the Top. The first time we took the Prangi to ICT Mall to Komtar route which was too far a walk. Look out for the signs that points you to the Tower at The Top Penang. That way is ALOT shorter.
We originally wanted to head up to the Top Penang for its afternoon tea. However, we didn’t make a reservation thinking that afternoon tea would be available. We were so wrong. The staff at the counter actually recommended us to visit E&O Penang for their afternoon tea. But since we were already here, we decided to head up to the Top View Restaurant for some light bites and views as well…
Turns out that there is a minimum spending of 50RM for lunch and 65RM for dinner at Top View Restaurant which was actually a very good deal. This is because, to head up to the Sky Walk, one would already have to fork out 68RM. Hence, we paid for the 50RM voucher which could be used to offset dining expenses at the Top View Restaurant. Super worth it. Reminded us of our affordable method to head up to Marina Bay Sands by dining at Lavo Italian Restaurant.
This time, we ordered the Earl Grey Tea (12RM), Honey Lemon Cucumber Cooler (12RM) as well as the Chicken Chop (36RM). We tried to pay the difference (10RM) via credit card but the network reception at The Top View Restaurant was not so good, we paid the 10RM in cash instead. It was rather nice to just nibble and sip while enjoying the views over George Town and Penang city. The chicken chop turned out to be really good as well. Nicely grilled with charred bits and the chicken was very tender. After the meal, we got to check out the views on the same level at the 68th floor…
You could also choose the outdoor seats but we chose the indoor ones to enjoy the aircon and reduce UV exposure 😅 We also saw that the Sky Walk was located at the same level so it’s really worth it just to pay 50RM for 2 pax to dine at Top View Restaurant.

On the way down, the signs somehow led us into the Jurassic Research Center @ The Top Penang…
We realised that we must have ventured the wrong way and back-tracked out of the Top Penang. There ought to be better directional signs for visitors to leave the premise. After our visit to The Top Penang, we strolled about 20 minutes back to Prestige Hotel Penang…
Before dinner, we went up to the roof top infinity pool of Prestige Hotel Penang again. This time, Kate met Natasha and introduced the game of Scrabble to her. For dinner, we checked out the Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata which surprisingly, maintains a 5.0 rating on Google review after receiving over 400 reviews. This we’ve got to find out more…

Dinner at Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata Penang
Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata opens at 6pm and if you walk past during the day, it would seem like there’s no restaurant here as it does not have signs on the outside when the shutters are closed. This time, we ordered Set A at 49RM which comes with 1 large pork set with vegetables. Spinach and glass noodles are refillable here at Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata. We also added 10RM for a portion of chicken and a large Thai Milk tea (8RM) – which came out to be such a large glass! The total bill came up to be 71RM inclusive of 10% taxes which was not too bad. The clincher for us (and many customers on Google review) was definitely the soup. It was so sweet, so tasty and it won’t make you feel thirsty. We found from the owner that only the freshest ingredients are used to boil the soup daily. Tasted like mum’s cooking – hearty and satisfying.
The other selling point is its dips. You can choose from either the spicy, mild or non-spicy option. The non-spicy dip allows customers, who can’t take spicy food, to still enjoy dipping the BBQ in a non-spicy sauce that is rich and flavourful. Does remind us of the authentic Thai flavours. Remember to add in the garlic bits for a different texture and added dimension to the taste!
At the end of the meal, there were also desserts as well. There were assorted local flavoured ice cream such as red bean, white coffee, jack fruit and black glutinous rice to choose from. The owners really does know how to satisfy the taste buds of its customers along with great service. No wonders the reviews have been raving good. If you’re in the vicinity and are craving for a hotpot/mookata, Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata would definitely be an excellent choice.
