Revisiting the Singapore Botanic Gardens…

Morning walk to Botanical Gardens from Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

During our staycation at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, we took a short walk over to the Singapore Botanic Gardens for one of our early morning walks.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 4th July 2015, after a four months wait, Singapore Botanic Gardens was finally inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee in Bonn, Germany. According to the UNESCO website, the Singapore Botanic Gardens “demonstrates the evolution of a British tropical colonial botanic garden that has become a modern world-class scientific institution used for both conservation and education.”

For us, it holds special memories because of the wedding photos taken here. Love the design of the main gate of the Botanical Gardens, the Orchid Gardens, the Tembusu Tree (which needs to be supported today) as well as the iconic Bandstand

After entering the premise of the gardens, we stopped by a pavilion next to the Swan Lake for some light refreshments (leftover popcorn from last night’s Tenet movie)…

While we were here, we also saw the statue of the swans taking flight. At this, we wondered why we are so confident that the swans would remain at this lake – naming it “Swan Lake” and even erecting a swan statue. Wouldn’t the swans attempt to relocate or in the event that they’re not able to produce offerings, there would be no swans here…🤔

This time, we found a new favourite within the gardens – The Frangipani Garden. The entire area is laced with the elegant frangipani, that reminds us of holidays in Bali. The swings were also a plus for us. Taking things down a notch and taking in the sights. Rooster and hens came to visit as well…

As we continued our stroll through the gardens, we also stumbled upon this staircase…

If you take a closer look at the bricks used, you’ll realise that there are marks inscribed on the bricks. Somewhat like arrows. This staircase was actually built by World War 2, Prisoners of War in Singapore. As an act of defiance, they left these marks on the bricks…

Next to the iconic bandstand, we also saw the garden of our national flower – Vanda Miss Joaquim
