Selangor Familiarisation Trip with Tourism Selangor
In Singapore, check- in was smooth. We hopped onto a bus which drove us to where the plane was. Due to the collaboration between Tourism Selangor and Firefly, you would be able to see some of Firefly’s planes adorned with destinations in Selangor. Also, you’ll be happy to note that in addition to landing at KLIA, you’ll also have to option to land closer to destinations that we’re covering in this post. Time saved!
Firefly is one of the few budget airline carriers that continues to provide light refreshment from a range of snacks and beverages during flight. A glass of orange juice and a curry puff on board served by the polite air crew was refreshing enough to set us on the right mood for the trip ahead. The flight duration was approximately 1h 10mins. Kudos to the flight crew for a smooth and pleasant journey to Selangor.
First stop, De Palmer Hotel in Kuala Selangor.

De Palmer Hotel is located near the banks of Selangor River. It is also a few minutes away from the Melawati hill which is one of the must-see tourist attractions in Kuala Selangor. Furthermore, this hotel took on the concept of a chalet-resort comprising of 2 units in one house, with a connecting door as well. There are a total of 48 chalets and 12 villas as well as facilities such as the swimming pool, banquet rooms, meeting facilities and free wifi. The room we stayed in were reasonably furnished with a modern-looking bathroom. Towels and Basic toiletries were provided as well.
Travel Tip: As you would be heading close to nature, you may want to prepare mosquito patches/ repellent (best to get those aerosol ones where you can spray not only on your skin but in the surroundings as well). Unfortunately, hair dryers or room slippers are not included, so you might want to keep those handy when you pack your luggage.
Selangor Familiarisation Trip with Tourism Selangor – Kampong Kuantan Firefly Tour
Viewing Time: 7.30pm – 10.30pm
Price: RM 40/ boat (4 passengers)
Tel: 603 3289 1439 / 603 3289 1549
In Kuala Selangor, there are 3 main locations to view fireflies (also known as“kelip-kelip” by the locals)
1. Kampong Kuantan Fire Flies Park
2. Firefly Park Resort Kampung, Bukit Belimbing
3. Pasir Penambang Jetty
This time, we headed over to the Kampong Kuantan Fire Flies Park. It took us approximately 20- 30 minutes to reach our destination from the resort. We were ushered into a room where the guide gave us a short introduction followed by a video to explain about the fireflies. The whole video lasted approximately 8 minutes but it was very educational. After the video presentation, there was a short cooking demonstration on how the traditional and famous Kueh Bahulu was made.
The lady spoke in Malay as she demonstrated, but it was not an issue for us as the guide translated in English. There was even a tasting session. Sedap (“Delicious” in Malay)! You could even grab a box of two for only RM 4.50/box. Definitely worth the sweet goodness!
We proceeded to the jetty where we gathered in groups of fours to board the sampan. Suited up in our life jackets , off we went on a sparkly and glittery adventure in the dark. Witnessing fireflies in action for the first time felt like we were on a whimsical journey in the dark where tiny bulbs glistened on the trees as if someone had hung LED lights on them. Oh, some “bulbs” were flying around too! Magical. Furthermore, the cool breeze blowing against our faces made the moment much more enjoyable. We were also able to admire the clusters of stars that spread out across the night sky, sparkling like diamonds while on the boat. It felt surreal.
Travel Tip: We were encouraged to switch off all light-emitting devices so that we could fully admire the beauty of the fireflies. Flash photography is strongly discouraged as it might scare off the fireflies that are sensitive creatures to begin with. If you are planning to take photos, it is recommended that you bring a really good camera that is able to take photos with little light (ie large aperture – any sponsors out there?). Remember to bring along your mozzie patches! It does get a little chilly at night so bring along a cardigan or jacket just in case.
P/S: The photos you see do not fully justify the magical moment in the fireflies experience. Experience it yourself at Kampong Kuantan Fire Flies Park! 😉
