In this Singapore Travel Series, we visit the eats along Jalan Besar. During this stroll down Jalan Besar Road, we visited Earnest Restaurant, Chin Sin Huan and Berseh Food Centre!
This morning, we were at ICA for our passport collection. After application and scheduling of collection online, we literally only spent 5 minutes within the ICA building, inclusive of waiting and collecting. 5 minutes! Kudos to the team at ICA! After collecting our passport from ICA (yes, we’re optimistic about travels in 2021! 😆), we walked past two malls in the rain…
After checking out the food options (which were mostly closed), we continued our stroll down Jalan Besar Road…
During this walk, we walked past an unique architecture with old-world charms. Opened in 1927, Kam Leng Hotel was visited by tourists all over the world. It was subsequently renovated and reopened in 2012. Today, Kam Leng is now a boutique hotel with 70 rooms, a restaurant as well as a terrace at level 2.
Walking along Jalan Besar, we kept our eyes peeled for our first meal of the day. As it was still early, there weren’t many stalls opened yet. Nonetheless, we stumbled upon Earnest Restaurant…
Earnest Restaurant
As we saw a small crowd here, we entered for our morning kopi (coffee) fix and had our first dish for the day…
During this visit to Earnest Restaurant, only an indonesian stall and this teochew fishball minced meat noodle stall was opened…
The fish ball was not one of the best we’ve tasted but the gravy mix for the dried noodles was excellent. You could taste the 扁鱼 (aka fried sole fish) which added depth to its flavours. At $4, there was pig’s liver, fish cake and three fishballs. Reasonably priced.
While sipping on our kopi at Earnest Restaurant, we chanced upon Chin Sin Huan Handmade Pau, just across the street. The simple and classy store front was sufficient to draw us from across the street to pay it a visit…
Chin Sin Huan Handmade Pau
During this visit to Chin Sin Huan, we tried out the Specialty Paus and were pleasantly surprised by the innovative Yuan Yang Pau…
The Yuan Yang Pau is a combination of red bean, lotus paste and salted egg yolk. A perfect combination of salty and sweet. Definitely will be heading back for seconds (and thirds) of this awesome pau.

Berseh Food Centre
Rounding up our Jalan Besar Walk, we visited Berseh Food Centre. This time, we tried the Fried Oyster Cake and Kway Chap. Both were surprisingly good, despite the fact that we had already had the paus and noodles…
During our visit to Berseh Food Centre, we also found several other interesting stalls that were not yet opened. These include the fried oyster, minced meat noodles, fried hokkien mee and turtle soup. Tried any of these at Berseh Food Centre? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Towards the end of our trip, the skies cleared up and we were able to enjoy the last leg of our walk, taking in sights of the traditional architecture along Jalan Besar road. We hope you have enjoyed our stroll through Jalan Besar in this Singapore Travel Series!
