Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata was where we headed to in Penang while searching for a hotpot joint. While looking through the reviews on Google, we found Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata maintaining a perfect rating of 5.0 even after receiving more than 400 reviews. This is by no means an easy feat and must probably be due to something good about their hotpot/BBQ (mookata)…

About Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata Penang
Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata is located at 93, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia and opens from 6pm to 11:30pm daily. During the day, you’ll find the shutter to be down and no signs that indicate this is the place for mookata. However, as night falls, Tem Xim lifts the shutter at 6pm and reveals the clean interiors within. By the time we arrived at 7pm, the restaurant was almost full.
The other thing we noticed was that there’s a small little altar with a photo of the Thai King placed above it. This adds to the authenticity of a Thai Mookata restaurant right? However, after speaking to the restaurant owner, we found out that they were local Malaysians and had no direct ties to Thailand. Hence, it was more of an appearance to make the restaurant a little more authentic. Quite ingenious isn’t it?

What We Had at Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata Penang
There are actually several plus points of dining at Tem Xim Charcoal
Smoking Hot Charcoal
Yes, the mookata uses smoking hot charcoal that allows the smokiness to be infused to the meats while you do the BBQ on the top.
Fresh Ingredients
The owners take pride in choosing on the freshest ingredients here. When the ingredients were brought to the table, we could see that the vegetables were individually washed and the homemade chicken was well marinated. These translated to a great dining experience for us this evening.
Excellent Soup Base
If you take a taste of the soup, you’ll realise that the soup is extremely sweet! This is definitely the biggest attraction of dining at Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata. After speaking to the owner, we found that the soup is boiled daily (for hours) using the freshest ingredients of the day to achieve such clear, beautiful and tasting soup.
Unlimited Spinach and Glass Noodles
With such a great soup base, you can actually just order the basic set and enjoy the unlimited spinach and glass noodles to fill up your stomach if you’re still hungry towards the end of the meal. Also, the glass noodles would absorb the goodness of the soup, making it slurp-licious as well.
Homemade Chili
The owners also made their own Thai chili. There are 3 choices to choose from. A spicy version, a moderate version and a non-spicy version. The owners have really put alot of thought into it, producing a non-spicy dip for those who cannot take spicy food. The dips were actually very appetizing. We enjoyed the spicy and non-spicy versions that reminded us of authentic Thai flavours which we had in Bangkok just the month prior. Add in generous amounts of fried garlic bits and you’re in for a great meal at Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata.
Great Service
We must say that the owners work the tables really hard. We observed that there was small talk with almost all the diners in the restaurant – making recommendations, asking how their experience was that evening and making the customers really comfortable dining at Tem Xim Charcoal mookata, as though we’re dining right at home.
Speaking of service, Tem Xim Charcoal Mookata also offers complimentary local-flavoured ice cream at the end of the meal. This time, we chose black glutinous rice and cempedak (jackfruit) ice cream which were pretty delicious.
You may have noticed that we didn’t really comment on the pork slices itself. This is because they were rather normal. Both the portion and the taste were nothing out of the ordinary but when mixed with the chili was tasty.
