Thasevi Food: Review of the Original Jalan Kayu Roti Prata

Thasevi Food Roti Prata Set Meal

Thasevi Food is one of the 2 restaurants along Jalan Kayu that serves up one of Singapore’s favourite local breakfast – the humble roti prata. Thasevi also lays claim to being the original while Cafeela across the street also serves this local delight to joggers and bikers passing the vicinity. Just as how we had put the battle of the Malacca Jonker Street Chicken Rice Ball to rest, we’ll also be checking out the roti prata at Thasevi as well as Cafeela in this post!

Thasevi Food lays claim to being the original roti prata stall at Jalan Kayu. Opened since the 1960s, Thasevi has been the supper hang out of choice for generations past. Without many late night food options then, Jalan Kayu (and thus Thasevi) quickly became a popular destination to cure those late night pangs. Many couples also chose Jalan Kayu as a paktor (dating) venue which also brings about today’s nostalgia to the young-at-heart among us!

What We Ate at Thasevi Original Roti Prata Restaurant

However, how does the original roti prata really fare? This time, we ordered the set meal that comes with 1 plain prata, 1 egg prata and a plate of chicken curry with the whole chicken thigh

The set meal is rather worth it because the plain prata costs ($1.1) while the egg prata costs ($2). Also, the curry chicken costs $5.5. Hence, the set meal saves you a dollar.

As for the roti prata itself, it was more on the doughy side. A good contrast to Mahamoodiya’s crispy prata. The chicken curry was rather spicy but combined with the roti prata, it was delish.

Just to be sure which roti prata is better, we hopped over to Cafeela Roti Prata restaurant to do a quick verification. To be honest, they were rather similar. However, as we visited Cafeela on a weekend, the prata were prepared in bulk. This led to non-crispy but similarly doughy prata. Hence, based on these 2 visits, Thasevi came up tops and for us, still holds up the winning chip as to the better-tasting roti prata at Jalan Kayu!
