This evening, we were searching for a craft beer joint in the vicinity of West Lake in Hanoi. Known as Furbrew, we saw that the reviews of the beers were pretty good and they had a decent food menu as well. Hence, we keyed in the address and walked towards Furbrew from our Airbnb nearby. However, once we were in the vicinity, we walked up and down the same a couple of times and were not able to locate Furbrew. Just as we were sobbing about this ordeal, we chanced upon a rather enticing offer from a bar in the vicinity, it read…
100k VND ($5.6SGD) for 3 small (175ml) craft beers
200k VND ($11.20SGD) for 3 large (375ml) craft beers
These were probably one of the best prices we’ve seen after visiting some of the best craft beer bars in Hanoi such as Standing Bar, 7 Bridges Brewing Company, Hanoi Cider House and Turtle Lake Brewing Company. With such prices, we were keen to enter and give up hope on Furbrew…only to find out that…
FURBREW HAD RENAMED ITSELF TO THE BOX BAR!!!
Though we were a little upset that this was not updated on Google but we were still very much happy to know that we’d be having some great (and affordable) craft beers this evening…
Inside The Box Bar (formerly known as Furbrew) Hanoi Craft Beers
Inside, the Box Bar exudes a casual and relaxing vibe. The large TV screen was showing an American TV series while above it, you’ll be able to check out all the craft beers that are available on tap. We also found that the deals for happy hours applies from 4 to 6pm daily and that the small size refers to 175ml and the large size refers to the 375ml. Hence, the larger size is definitely more worth it. We then proceeded upstairs to check out the balcony seats which would allow us to have street views as we dined…
Once we were seated at level 2, we were given the menu from the staff. They also pointed out to us that there are buzzers on the table to call the staff if we needed anything else. Great use of technology such that the staff can work at level 1 and only come up when required.
The Box Bar (formerly known as Furbrew) Menu
As we were looking through the menu, we found that The Box Bar offered an extensive food menu. For a craft beer joint, we were pretty impressed. Later on, we found out that actually, the menu were from the different restaurants in the vicinity! If you look closely at the menu, you’d see names such as Cousins, Cugini and Daluva, which are other excellent restaurants nearby. Hence, the other great thing about dining at The Box Bar is that you’d be able to try out different menus right here!
What Craft Beers we had at The Box Bar Hanoi (formerly known as Furbrew)
As the main point of dining at The Box Bar this evening was to try out the different craft beers, we decided to go for the smaller flight of 3 beers at 100VND. For the first 3 beers, we chose Bia Pho, Lemongrass Wheat Beer and Tay Pale Ale.
The Bia Pho actually does have the taste of pho. However, unlike its Pho cocktail counterpart at Unicorn Pub, it just didn’t taste right. A little too light on the beer and a little too heavy on the pho. For the first 3 beers, we chose the lighter beers in ascending order. Lemongrass Wheat Beer helped to cleanse the palette and provided a refreshing flavour. Not a favourite but it does have that southeast asian flavour that would not be available elsewhere. Lastly, we had the Tay Pale Ale, which was our favourite in the first 3 craft beers because of its mild woody aftertaste.
As we were trying out the craft beers from The Box Bar in ascending order, we tried out Chinook IPA along with two stouts – Celebration Stout and Independence Stout. For starters, we LOOOVE Chinook IPA! It was hoppy and had that big woody taste which we enjoyed. As for the stouts, both were rich, milky and creamy. However, we enjoyed Independence Stout a little more because of its smokey and chocolatey tastes…
What Food we had at The Box Bar Hanoi (formerly known as Furbrew)
For food, we had the Chicken Katsu Burger (160k VND) as well as the BBQ Pork Ribs (260k VND). To be honest, both food weren’t fantastic but they were still decent. For the chicken katsu burger, it wasn’t as crisp as we expected. The meat itself was slightly dry. The sauce though helped to pull this dish together. Otherwise, a soggy patty along with dry-ish meat would be bad. The ribs tasted ok but the meat was on the lean side. Having tried the version at Hanoi Cider, the ribs was slightly on the meh side.

We’re thankful that we were able to stumble upon the new Furbrew (now known as The Box Bar) and enjoy the happy hour prices. The Chinook IPA and Independence Stout were clearly our favourites. As for food, what we tried were not that good. Perhaps, you could try out the pizzas since they’re from reputable pizza joints in the vicinity. Enjoy the affordable craft beers at The Box Bar (formerly known as Furbrew) and let us know what you think in the comments section below!
