The Darwin Hotel Review: A Beautiful Boutique Hotel in Atlanta…

The Darwin Hotel was where we stayed at during our visit to Atlanta in the USA. There are several reasons why we wanted to stay at The Darwin Hotel. Firstly, it is a boutique hotel that has recently been renovated. From their website, you’ll be able to see the beautiful interior deco, the trendy lobby and the fairy lights in the courtyard – all of which has caught Kate’s attention 😇 Secondly, it is located within the Old Fourth Ward – also known as the old industrial area of Atlanta. This area has since transformed itself into a hip area for locals and visitors alike. One of these places is Ponce City Market, which is just a stone’s throw away from The Darwin Hotel. Lastly, if you’re looking for a workout, attractions at Pemberton Place such as the World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium as well as the National Center for Civil and Human Rights are about 30 minutes away by foot. Relatively near by our standards. Hence, Darwin Hotel was where we stayed at during our visit to Atlanta!

Our first impressions of The Darwin Hotel was that it is a beautifully appointed hotel. As you enter into the lobby, you can find high ceilings, “candle” ceiling lights and even fairy lights in the courtyard. The lobby itself has a bar area that serves coffee in the morning and turns into a lively bar area in the evenings.

We were thankful that despite arriving at 5:30am, we were able to have our room upon arrival. After checking in at the reception, we were given 2 paper cranes which allowed us to exchange for drinks at the bar. You could choose to have wines or coffees. We kept it for our chill time this evening. Next, it was time to check out our room at the Darwin Hotel Atlanta!

Overall, we were very impressed with the interior decorations of our room. It sort of reminded us of another hotel – The Prestige Hotel in Penang because of rose gold and xanadu colours used. The barnyard door that segregates the room from the bathroom adds a nice touch as well. The room is clean and there’s a nice mix of wooden panels (by the bed side) as well as modern fittings (at the sink). Bathroom is clean and well appointed with shower amenities provided.

There were a couple (just a couple) of things that we didn’t like though. The location of the TV is a little strange. You cannot lie down and watch TV as the TV is located to the left side of the bed. Hence, if you’re lying down, you have to turn sideways to watch TV. The other thing is that because of the location next to the road, we thought that noise from the road was relatively loud as well. Hence, choose a courtyard-facing door if possible.

One of the highlights of our stay at The Darwin Hotel was definitely the Courtyard. The Courtyard is located next to the lobby and bar area where you can sit outdoors and also order your drinks to be had in the Courtyard. This evening, after our dinner at Minero (Ponce City Market), we returned to exchange our cranes for 2 glasses of wines. The fireplace in the Courtyard were lit and that not only provided heat for us but also added to the feel and atmosphere in the Courtyard.

As for facilities, there is a small gym in the Darwin Hotel with a treadmill and weight machine. You can also get ice from an ice machine at level 2 and water from level 1.

As mentioned earlier, the Ponce City Market is just minutes away with a great food hall where you can find various cuisine. We tried out Minero, a Mexican casual dining restaurant and had a really good time. And if you’re up for a walk, the big attractions of Atlanta at Pemberton Place (World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, National Center for Human and Civil Rights) are just 30 minutes away by foot.

Overall, we’re actually quite surprised how the management remodeled the “old motel” feel to become the beautiful boutique hotel that The Darwin Hotel is today. Although the rates are slightly higher (we paid about $270SGD per night), we thought that the location is pretty good and the interior decoration elevates the entire experience altogether as well. If you’re visiting Atlanta, do consider The Darwin Hotel too!
