The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is probably one of the most iconic landmarks along the Singapore River. Built in 1928, the Fullerton Hotel used to house the Singapore’s General Post Office, the Exchange Room, Exchange Reference Library as well as the prestigious Singapore Club. Whenever we visited restaurants, hotels or events along the Singapore such as the free flow alcohol at Panorama, staycation at Swissotel Merchant Court or simply a walk along the Singapore River, we’d be filled with awe for this great old dame of Singapore.
Hence, during our recent anniversary celebration, we took the opportunity to do a staycation at the Fullerton Hotel Singapore and checked out the Straits Club Heritage Room. In this post, we’ll cover the Straits Club Heritage Room, offerings at The Straits Club (Executive Lounge of the Fullerton Hotel Singapore) as well as the facilities here.
Lobby of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore
The lobby of the Fullerton Hotel Singapore can be a place to explore in itself. The high ceilings exudes the grandeur expected of this class of hotel. In addition, there are many instagrammable spots in the lobby such as The Fullerton Hotel’s restored Rolls-Royce fleet (we saw the The Rolls-Royce Phantom II this time), the iconic Fullerton Postmaster teddy bears as well as the Fullerton Heritage Gallery.
Particularly at the Fullerton Heritage Gallery, you’ll learn how the history of Singapore is intrinsically intertwined with the Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Gazetted as the 71st national monument of Singapore, the Fullerton Singapore Hotel was not only the General Post Office (better known as “GPO” then), it also used to house government offices such as the Marine Department, the Imports and Exports Office as well as the Port Health Office. Many other ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Trade, Economic Development Board, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (then known as the Inland Revenue Department) and the Ministry of Communications. This also meant that many of Singapore’s pioneer leaders such as Dr Goh Keng Swee and Mr Hon Sui Sen would have worked here before. Even Mr Lee Kuan Yew himself, spoke at the Fullerton Square as part of the lunchtime rallies.
During the British Colonial Era, the General Post Office aka GPO (or the Fullerton Singapore Hotel today) was known as “Mile Zero”. This was because all measurements taken for roads started from here. For instance, Bukit Timah was located at the 7th mile then. Using these measurements and milestones, people used them to navigate and find their way around, allowing them to know where they were all over Singapore.
The Fullerton Heritage Gallery is free and open to the public. Hence, when if you’re in the area, do drop by to learn about a slice of Singapore’s history through the Fullerton Hotel Singapore.
The Fullerton Hotel Singapore Straits Heritage Club Room Review
The entire check-in experience was smooth and professionally executed. As we were a little early, we were personally shown to the lift lobby and were provided with a temporary access card to enter the swimming pool area. This allowed us to chill by the pool while our room was being prepared.
While we were shown to the lift lobby, we revealed that we were celebrating our anniversary and to our surprise, within such a short span of time (less than an hour), our room was ready – decorated with balloons, a bottle of wine, strawberries as well as a Fullerton Hotel post card (with anniversary greetings) signed off by the General Manager!
The room itself was beautifully appointed with in-room amenities such as Nespresso coffee machine as well as bathroom amenities from Bottega Veneta. Cable TV came complete with movie and educational channels such as HBO, Discovery and TLC. There’s even a DVD player that allowed us to play a selection of movies available at the Straits Club. This time, we caught Batman vs Superman…
The Straits Club Review: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s Executive Lounge
As a guest at the Straits Heritage Club Room, we had access to The Straits Club – Fullerton Singapore Hotel’s Executive Lounge…
The Straits Club opens from 6:30am to 11pm daily. With access to the Straits Club, all your dining needs would be addressed. This is because, you’ll be served a
Champagne Breakfast from 6:30am to 11am (love it that breakfast extends to 11am unlike most hotel breakfasts that ends at 10am)
Afternoon Tea from 2:30pm to 4:30pm (Classic afternoon tea with light refreshments including traditional scones – a highlight at Fullerton Hotels)
Evening Canapes and Cocktails from 5:30pm to 7:30pm (cocktails and canapes, including free-flow servings of the premium Veuve Clicquot champagne)
Hence, if you take all of the above into consideration, it is actually value-for-money to be staying at a room with Straits Club access.
After checking-in, the first “meal” at the Straits Club was the Afternoon Tea (from 2:30pm to 4:30pm)…
Afternoon Tea at The Straits Club (the Fullerton Hotel Singapore) is really special and is described as follows in the menu:
“The particularly English institution of Afternoon Tea dates from early Victorian days. It traditionally offered ‘something hot, something savory and something sweet’. Apart from the tea, most of the dishes are native to the British Isles: Baked English scones with clotted cream and jam, thinly-sliced cucumber sandwiches and tea cakes.
The connoisseur will accept only plain tea, perhaps with just a thin slice of lemon. For those who prefer milk or sugar with their tea, old fashion etiquette dictated the tea be poured first, followed by hot water to weaken the tea as desired, then sugar and lastly; lemon or milk. However, other authorities say that if milk is put into the empty cup first, the resultant cup of tea has a more blended taste.”
In particular, we loooooved the baked English scones! Crisp texture on the outside, light, fluffy and moist on the inside. No wonder it’s a highlight of the afternoon tea at Fullerton Hotels in Singapore.
From 5:30pm to 7:30pm, the Straits Club serves up its daily evening canapes and cocktails. We’ve been to several hotel lounge’s cocktail hours and we must say that the cocktail hours at the Straits Club ranks highly on the list. Of course, one of the most memorable hotel lounge experience was definitely at the Pan Pacific Singapore. Nonetheless, we were happy to report that the free-flow premium Veuve Clicquot Champagne is indeed as good as they say…
For breakfast, we were able to choose between dining at the Town Restaurant or at the Straits Club. For you, our beloved readers, we chose both!
Breakfast at Town Restaurant Fullerton Hotel Singapore
If you’ve ever walked past the Fullerton Hotel Singapore towards the Marina Bay area, you would have noticed patrons dining at Town Restaurant while enjoying the sights next to the Singapore River. This time, we did just that. It was indeed therapeutic. Imagine this: having authentic Singapore breakfast staple of kopi, eggs and kaya toast, at one of the most iconic and historic structures in Singapore. A perfect start to the day…
Of course, we did it while leisurely reading the crisp new Straits Times of the day, sloooowly…ah…shiok! After checking out the Town Restaurant, we headed back to the Straits Club and were pleasantly surprised by the options available here…
The breakfast at Straits Club is a semi-buffet style where you can order items from the menu and enjoy a small selection of buffet including bak kut teh! :O This time, we ordered The Russian (Vodka Scrambled Eggs), Eggs Benedict and the Pan-Fried Turnip Cake. The best part? Breakfasts at the Straits Club comes with free-flow Champagne/Mimosa as well! Talk about a classy breakfast…
Facilities and What You Can Do @ The Fullerton Hotel Singapore
If you’ve ever strolled along the Singapore River, you’d notice the open-air swimming pool of the Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Here, we spent both afternoons as well as an evening, lazing and waving at junk boats that passed by the hotel on the Singapore River. From here, you’ll also have easy access to the Fullerton spa…
In the evenings, we also strolled along the Marina Bay to catch the fountain show at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) as well as the complimentary outdoor performances at the Esplanade…
After checking out, we were also a stone’s throw away from the restaurants at Boat Quay. This time, we had some Sze Chuan cuisine…
