Tiger Brewery Tour Blog Review: History, Making and Taste of Tiger Beer!

The only Tiger Cub Beer bottle in existence

When we visit a country, one of the things we enjoy doing is to visit the local brew. Be it sipping on the Pineapple IPA in Hawaii or the Tangerine Wheat beer in Eureka’s Lost Coast Brewery, these experiences at a local setting give us a feel of the places we visit. Likewise, in Singapore, what better place to enjoy the local brew, than at its source? Tiger Brewery Tour offers just that!

Getting to Tiger Brewery Tour

The only part that we disliked about Tiger Brewery Tour is that it is located at such a ulu (Singlish for “out of the way”) area in Singapore. Why can’t they locate it in the heart of the city like the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam?

Tiger Brewery is located at 459 Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, Singapore 639934. Translated to “Very Far”. This is the far west of Singapore and to get there, we took the MRT and alighted at Joo Koon MRT Station before taking bus 182 which alights the entrance of Tiger Brewery. By the way, Google maps is inaccurate in that there are currently no buses that take you from Boon Lay MRT Station to Tiger Brewery. Otherwise, the tour (and the beers) were fantastic!

When we arrived at Tiger Brewery, the first thing we had to do was to provide our identification in exchange for our passes. Don’t forget this. Without age verification, you’ll not be able to join the Tiger Brewery Tours. Next, we headed to the Visitor Centre where our guide Colin (you have to remember your guide’s name!), told us some interesting history about Tiger Beer. It is also here where we see all the accolades that Tiger Beer has won throughout the years.

Did you know that during WW2, instead of Tiger Beer, Tiger Cub was brewed instead? It was said that due to the shortage of raw materials during WW2, a “reduced version” of Tiger Beer was brewed instead. It was sold until 1947 and the only bottle of Tiger Cub Beer in existence today, resides at the Tiger Brewery Visitor Centre.

Next, we headed to the Brew House where we learnt about the 4 main ingredients that goes into Tiger Beer – Malt, Hop Yeast and Water. We also learnt that the water used is actually NEWater and that it is #brewedbythesun because the entire process of brewing Tiger Beer is powered by solar power. If you observe closely, there are many solar panels that line the buildings at Tiger Brewery, allowing the brewing process to be wholely powered by solar energy. Colin then told us more specifically about the process that includes milling, mashing, boiling, fermentation, storage and filtration. Locally, 6 brands are brewed at Tiger Brewery: ABC, Anchor, Barons Strong Brew, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Heineken and Tiger Beer.

At the Packaging Gallery, we learnt how cans and bottles are cleaned, filled and pasteurized before distribution. Here, you’ll also be able to try to tap your own beer. To be able to try to tap your own beer, you’ll have to answer a few questions including the name of your guide (remember the part above where we asked you to remember the name of your guide?). Kate was able to answer it immediately and got to taste the first freshly tapped Tiger Beer during this tour. The other question was about the temperature at which Tiger Beer should be served at. That’s 5 to 7 degrees πŸ˜‰

Lastly, we ended our tour at the favourite part of the Tiger Brewery Tour – Beer Appreciation Session! Included in the price of the ticket of Tiger Brewery Tour, you’ll be able to enjoy a 500ml Tiger Beer from the tap as well as 5 additional glasses (150ml each) from the following choices of

Baron’s
Guinnes
ABC
Anchor
Tiger Black
Tiger White

You will be given the 5 sampling tickets at the start of the tour. Don’t lose them! You can also purchase additional tickets at only $5 for 5 sampling tickets which is quite worth the value. Alternatively, there is also the option of visiting Tiger Tavern from Tuesdays to Sundays between 1:30pm to 6:30pm at the price of $11. This includes a 500ml beer and be able to purchase subsequent beers at $4 or $5 nett. That’s not too bad a deal too.

As for snacks, you can bring your own snacks or purchase them through the vending machines there. Perhaps you can even try to bring KFC there for lunch? Just before we left, we returned our Tiger Brewery Tour passes and exchanged for a bottle of freshly brewed Tiger beer…
