While travelling in the vicinity of Ewha Woman’s University, we stumbled upon Premium Jjimdak. Actually, prior to our travels in South Korea, we had already wanted to try it out. So chancing upon Premium Jjimdak was a great find! But what actually is Jjimdak? It is actually a hot plate chock full of Korean braised chicken! For 3,000krw more, you’ll get a layer of cheesy goodness strewn across the delicious braised chicken – the legendary Cheese Jjimdak. We added korean dumplings (aka mandu) which was so worth it! STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for anyone visiting Seoul!

After visiting Namsan Seoul Tower, we took a bus down and headed to try out Manjok Ohyang Jokbal. Jokbal is actually South Korea’s take on the braised pig’s trotters. However, we were in for such a big surprise on our first bite! None of the pig’s trotter’s we’ve tried, ever tasted so unique! The skin, unlike the many braised pig’s trotters we’ve tried, was not chewy nor oily! In fact, the gelatinous goodness simply melted in our mouths. The meat, as expected was tender and was superbly marinated. It is little wonder why it is now a Michelin BIB Gourmand’s restaurant! Go for the “Foreigner’s Set” (ikr!) which was quite worth the value. At 38,000krw, it includes the famous Jokbal, steamed egg and dumplings/rice cake soup. Definitely worth it!

Our experience at Big Mama’s Restaurant @ Kim Tian Road , gave us an impression that in order to have teppan fried rice, you’d always have to order a galbi dish and finish it halfway before a fried rice can be made. But at Yoogane Chicken Galbi, you can have your Teppan Fried Rice straight! Moreover, the portion was huge as well. A single person portion at 6,000krw was good for 2 to share!

Restaurants to visit in Seoul South Korea – Tosokchon Samgyetang Korean Chicken Soup

Having done our homework, we knew that after visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, there’s a famous Korean Chicken Soup (Samgyetang) restaurant in the vicinity. That’s exactly where we headed to – Tosokchon Samgyetang Korean Chicken Soup! Price was a little steep at 16,000krw but portion was good for 2 to share. Taste wise, though it was not as full-flavoured as the other ones we’ve tried but it sure tasted healthy!

If you’d like to find out more of the hipster pub scene in Seoul, check out Craft Roo, an up and coming local brewery located in an area called Donhwamun, that has a traditional streets revamped with bars and restaurants. This time we ordered the sampler that allowed us to taste the tastefully beers that are crafted in-house as well as the Fried Chicken & Potato with Olive and Cherry Tomatoes. Chicken and Beer in Korea! 😛

Restaurants to visit in Seoul South Korea – Jajangmyeong

Jajangmyeong (7,000krw) at Omori Restaurant

We’ve always wanted to try Jajangmyeong in South Korea. While walking along the streets, we actually did not see many stalls that sell this Korean hand-pulled noodles drenched in braised meat sauce (much like the Chinese version of 杂酱面). In fact, they sound really similar as well. Perhaps of the same origins? What we’ve learnt is that if you see a stall that features Jajangmyeong and has a see-through glass that shows the chef churning out the noodles, you’ve hit the jackpot! The version at Omori Restaurant was smooth, simple, tasty and slurpilicious goodness! But please don’t try anything else, the kim chi soup we tried was meh.

When in Seoul, patbingsu, a shaved ice dessert is probably a must-try as well. Mostly because its so much cheaper than in Singapore!!! Plus, there are tons of flavours to choose from – each beautifully decorated. No regrets with the Strawberry Cheesecake Chocolate Patbingsu. Share it!

Seoul Street Foods – Korean Egg Sandwich

There were many street foods options while shopping in the Myeongdong area in the evening. However, we found most of these street foods rather expensive. Well, mostly because they were selling tornado potatoes for 5,000krw and seafoods such as oysters and even lobsters! This time, we tried the Korean Egg Sandwich. As the name suggests, its an egg sitting atop of a breaded bun. Not too bad for a quick snack before your next destination.
