Enroute to Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koah, we stopped by Wai Kei Cafe to try out the roasted meats and char siew. Thinking that we’d be able to enjoy tender, juicy and fatty char siew like that of Meng Meng Roasted Duck, we were actually headed for a bad experience ahead…
What We Had at Wai Kei Cafe Penang
Wai Kei Cafe is actually similar to a kopitiam in Singapore. You’ll enter, find a seat and order the food. Just that at Wai Kei Cafe, the only stall seems to be the roasted meat stall. The staff will approach you for your order. Drinks are ordered separately via another staff from the drinks stall…
Plum juice and nutmeg juice seems to be popular at Wai Kei. However, we decided to go “traditional” and had coke instead.
Soon, the staff from the Wai Kei Roasted Meat stall approached us and asked what we would like to eat. We decided to go for char siew and roasted meat (siew yoke) for 2 pax. We also asked if we could have 油饭 (literally translated as oily rice), the fragrant rice that is usually served with chicken rice in Singapore. However, they did not have it and reasoned that their meats were already oily, the fragrant “oily rice” would be too much for the customer – which is a whole lot of bu**ocks.
By the looks of the char siew roasted meat, you can determine that the meats were so-so. And it was so. The char siew was dry and the cut was rather thin. Taste wise, there was a little bit of the burnt sweet taste on some of the char siew but that was pretty much it. The dry-ness of the meat, overpowers all other semblance of this dish. The roasted meat on the hand had too much fats – a poor proportion of the meat to fats ratio that is critical for roasted siew yoke meats. The only plus for this platter was that the siew yoke had cackling skin. Overall, the chili had to salvage the situation as we tried to down the meats with the by-now-cold rice. Surprisingly, the gravy that was provided was cold on the on-set. Hence, we did not touch the gravy thereafter.

Overall, our visit to Wai Kei Cafe was actually quite disappointing. In order not to be disappointed, give Wai Kei Cafe and its roasted meats a miss. Head straight to Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay instead.
