Waitomo Homestead was where we headed to for lunch after our visit to Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Not only is Waitomo Homestead a popular rest stop for visitors to the Waitomo cave system, they are also known for their excellent pies!
Inside Waitomo Homestead
We reached Waitomo Homestead just before the crowds arrived. Within, Waitomo Homestead is really spacious. There’s a small area in the entrance where souvenir is sold and within, there are alot of seats available – both indoors and outdoors…
After finding out seats indoors, we headed to the counter to take a look at the Waitomo Homestead menu…
From the Waitomo Homestead Menu, there were offerings such as
Eggs Benedict ($24.5)
Poached eggs on a potato & herb rosti with baby spinach and hollandaise with your choice of bacon, salmon or mushrooms
Steak Sandwich ($25.5)
Steak strips with cheddar, tomato, lettuce and caramlised onion on Turkish bread and chips & aioli
Fish & Chips ($23.5)
Beer battered tarakihi, chips, lemon, tartare sauce & salad
Beef Nachos ($21.5)
Beef, beans, cheese, chili sauce and sour cream served on nachos
There are also kids menu (cheese burger and fries) as well as snacks (wedges, fries etc.) along with the famous pies!
There are actually quite alot of options dining at Waitomo Homestead. This was what we ordered this time…
What We Had at Waitomo Homestead
This time, we ordered the minced meat pie ($4.5), ale steak and cheese pie ($4.5), pork spring roll ($8) and the banana shake ($7.5). The pies are still the best. Both pies had meaty pieces and we love the cheesiness with the ale steak and cheese pie. The meal was enjoyed with the nice lodge feel of Waitomo Homestead on the inside.
After our meal, we headed outdoors to enjoy the fresh air of the countryside while sipping on a draft beer of East India Pale Ale. A pint for $10 nett was not too bad…

All in all, we enjoyed our visit to Waitomo Homestead. Do not and we mean DO NOT miss the pies at Waitomo Homestead. The pork spring roll on the other hand was meh – probably a gimmick for the Chinese tourists. If the weather is good out, check out the seats outdoors as you will be able to take in the fresh air and enjoy views of the greenery while dining on the great pies at Waitomo Homestead. Enjoy!
