In and around Chow Rasta Market Penang
Chow Rasta actually means “where four roads cross” in Urdu (a language close to Hindi) and Chow Rasta Market is actually where locals head to for their daily produce such as meats and vegetables. Along Walk @ Chow Rasta, there are street stalls that sells clothes, shoes, pots and pans – again meant for daily needs of the locals. However, nearby, you’ll be able to see one of Penang’s most famous street art – Boy on a Bike by Ernest Zacharevic (an artist originally from Lithuania)
In addition to street art by Ernest Zacharevic, you’ll also be able to find metallic/iron street art caricature sprinkled throughout Penang…
Following GeorgeTown’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a competition was held to find artistic proposals for the wider street art exhibition in Penang. SCULPTUREATWORK (a creative studio from Bangsar,KL) won the contract to represent “voices from the people” through iron-wrought caricatures. If you happen to stumble upon some of them during your travels in Penang, take a look and you’ll be able to learn a small piece of Penang culture through these caricatures.
Enroute to Chow Rasta Market from Prestige Hotel Penang , we also took in sights of the heritage buildings along Penang Lane as well as the smells of the street hawkers in the vicinity.
Where to eat at Chow Rasta Market Penang – Hutton Lane Roti Bakar
Roti Bakar refers to “grilled bread” and at Hutton Lane Roti Bakar, they serve their now-famous Roti Bakar Georgetown (RM4). By the time we arrived at Hutton Lane Roti Bakar, it was already 11am. Hence, we also ordered an iced coffee (RM2) to chill while being shaded from the sun’s ray under a tree. As the venue is out in the open, rainy days would likely see less business.
Roti Bakar Georgetown is actually buttered toast served with two half-boiled eggs. It differs slightly from the Singapore version as the slices are thicker and does not come with kaya. But both versions are delish when dunked into the half-boiled eggs that are mixed with drips of dark soy sauce and pepper. The other unique thing about Hutton Lane Roti Bakar’s rendition is the butter. From the taste, it seems like they use Planta, which really brings out the old-school flavours. Yum! 😋
While you’re there, don’t forget to try other variations such as Roti Balut Telur – a french toast of sorts where the bread soaked in beaten eggs before toasting as well as its Kari Ayam (curry chicken). Roti Canai are other options available at Hutton Lane Roti Bakar.

Where to eat at Chow Rasta Market Penang – Ais Tingkap Penang
Also in the vicinity of Chow Rasta Market, you’ll be able to find Ais Tingkap Penang. Literally translated as “Window Sherbet”, Ais Tingkap Penang sells chilled drinks that are guaranteed to cool you down on a hot sunny day. Its most famous drink of the same namesake is a mixture of rose syrup with basil seeds (sirap selasih) topped with coconut flesh and shaved ice. Another foodie item not-to-be-missed when you’re in the vicinity of Chow Rasta.
Where to eat at Chow Rasta Market Penang – Woong Kee Beancurd
Woong Kee Beancurd (originally from Ipoh) has an outlet in Penang near Chow Rasta Market. We really enjoyed the beancurd here because you can choose the flavour of the sugar to be placed in your beancurd! 😲 The flavoured sugar include
– Ginger sugar
– White sugar
– Black sugar
– Chrysanthemum sugar
– Blue Flower sugar
– Osmanthus sugar
– Rose sugar
Of course, we went with Osmanthus sugar this time and it felt soooo luxurious! You really get to taste the Osmanthus as you enjoy the silky smooth beancurd from Woong Kee. Reminded us of the Osmanthus dessert that we usually have at Tim Ho Wan. We also added glutinous rice balls with peanut and sesame flavours. The rice balls were still chewy and went with the beancurd really well. Definitely a great addition while having beancurd at Woong Kee Beancurd. This time, we also tried out the carrot soya which came out to be beautiful cream pinkish colour. You could taste the mild carrot flavours with the soy milk – a healthy option.
