If you’re wondering what to eat at Boon Lay Place Market Food Village? Fret not! In this review of Boon Lay Place Market and Food Village, we’ll show you some of the more famous stalls such as Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak as well as some lesser known food stalls…
About Boon Lay Place Food Village
Located at 221A Boon Lay Place, Boon Lay Place Food Village is THE go-to place for Westerners (Singaporeans living in the West) to check out some of the best local hawker fare, at a fraction of the price. Also known as Boon Lay Market, this Singapore food centre has been known for amazing foods such as Power Nasi Lemak and Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee. That is why, even in the post-COVID era, Boon Lay Place Food Village can still get rather crowded, especially over the weekends…
This is also why Boon Lay Market serves as a great venue for reunions which we did – with no more than 5 people in the group! As we ventured out, the group came back with this spread of food…
This is the review of the food we had at Boon Lay Place Food Village – The hits and misses…
What to eat at Boon Lay Place Food Village: Hit #1 House of Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken
Even while writing this post, we still can’t help ourselves from salivating. This is because the soy sauce chicken from House of Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken is SO SO GOOD! Unlike most soy sauce chicken, the version at House of Hong Kong fills the cavities of your mouth with pure soy sauce fragrance on each bite. The chicken itself was tender and best part is definitely the skin. Again, unlike most soy sauce chicken where the skin would be just plain salty, the rendition at House of Hong Kong had a certain sweetness to it as well. The texture of the gelatinous skin was so “toing” (aka Q or bouncy) that it leaves you gasping for more.
What to eat at Boon Lay Place Market and Food Village: Hit #2 Hui Ji Tian Tian Lai Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee
Normally when we think of what to eat at Boon Lay Place Food Village, Ho Huat Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee comes to mind. Indeed, during our visit, the queue was rather long at this established food joint. However, we didn’t want to wait too long. Hence, we decided to give Hui Ji Tian Tian Lai a try. This, we did not regret. The dry version of the Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee from Hui Ji Tian Tian Lai had a slight hint of wok hei and the prawn stock promptly infused into the noodles itself. Although the chili is definitely not as good as Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, it is still overall a pretty decent plate of fried hokkien prawn mee that we’d definitely recommend. A gem that was discovered during this visit. Hopefully, since not many people reads this post, this stall won’t be flooded with patrons during our next visit 🙏 😂
Boon Lay Place Food Village: Hit #3 Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak’s Fried Chicken Wings
A visit to Boon Lay Place Food Village is never complete without the mention of Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak. And it’s not because of the long queues nor its availability as a midnight food haunt due to its late closing hours (it closes at 3:30am!). But simply because of its legendary fried chicken wings. They’re so good that we simply ordered them by itself. The batter gives you that nostalgic feeling and brings you way back. Not too crispy but just nicely done. Inside, the juices flow as you bite into the tender chicken wings. Perfect.
What to eat at Boon Lay Place Market and Food Village: Hit #4 Boon Lay Fried Kway Teow Mee
You know the feeling when you’re having a great plate of Fried Kway Teow? The smell of the fried eggs and sweet sauce just draws you in for that next mouthful of stir-fried goodness. Only a whole mouthful at one go (be careful when its hot!) will be able to do it justice as you chew and allow the flavours to fuse and disperse all at the same time, as if a symphony is going on right in your mouth? Yup, that’s what Boon Lay Fried Carrot Cake and Kway Teow Mee‘s rendition does to you. Need we say more? 🤤
Boon Lay Place Food Village: Miss #1 Mabo Lor Mee
During this food frenzy, we did encounter a miss. Although we did finish the bowl of Lor Mee from Mabo, we found it a little too yeasty for the lor mee noodles. Nonetheless, at $2.50 a bowl, it does have its supporters as the pictures tell. The laksa on the other hand, was not too bad. Chock full of ingredients that made it stand out out. Again, the thick laksa noodles was a little too run-of-the-mill and did not really stand out. Overall, we’d probably give Mabo Lor Mee a miss at our next visit.
Boon Lay Place Market and Food Village: Miss #2 Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Crackers
As far as ngoh hiong and prawn crackers go, we think that that the rendition at Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Crackers were just ok. Well, as a caveat, we did ta pao, instead of having it there. But, we found 2 issues to highlight to our readers. Firstly, the prawn crackers, while crispy, was a little too bitter for us. We’ve not tasted such bitter versions before and it was definitely something that we didn’t anticipate. Secondly, the bee hoon lacked the old-school taste (古早味) that should have complimented the fried items. There’s actually a smaller third issue, in that the pricing is rather steep (no less at a hawker centre), pointing towards the fact that they may have rested on their laurels after finding foodie fame.

In Conclusion…
Boon Lay Place Food Village remains one of the best foodie destinations in the western part of Singapore. We’d definitely return for more and probably take away a whole soy sauce chicken from House of Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken. So so good!
