Circuit Road Market and Food Centre is also known as 十楼 (or Ten Floors). This is because when Singapore first started building public housing, we didn’t build them tall. Hence, locals would define an area according to how tall the HDB (Housing and Development Board – Government entity that builds public housing in Singapore) build the blocks. So if someone says that they’re going to 十楼 (or Ten Floors), they’re heading to the vicinity of Circuit Road Market and Food Centre.
We also like the mural at Circuit Road Food Centre. It has a certain young vibe to it. Definitely injected life to the matured estates around Circuit Road Hawker Centre. Soon, it was time to check out what to eat at Circuit Road Market and Food Centre…
What to eat at Circuit Road Food Centre?
The first level of Circuit Road Market and Food Centre is the wet and dry market. That’s where you’ll get your fresh produce like meats, fish and vegetables as well as dry goods such as spices, dried shrimps and mushrooms. For food, head to the second level. As it was our first time there, we decided to check out where the locals were eating. We noticed a long winding queue for a vegetarian stall. Thereafter, we noticed this…
Porridge for breakfast? Yes pls…
We headed over to Yuan Porridge and Hand Made Noodles (源) to order porridge for breakfast. We saw that there were quite a few people crowding around the stall but there wasn’t an actual queue to join. Hence, we asked the lady in front of us, whether she had ordered. She replied politely that she did. Hence, we approached the chef, helming the porridge pots to make our order.
This may feel strange at first but there’s really no one there to take orders. But when you approach the chef, she’ll look up (despite her busyness) to take your order. Just make sure you already know what to order before you approach her. Else, you’d be just affecting her mojo. This time, we ordered the Century Egg Congee With Pork (皮蛋瘦肉粥) as well as the Mee Sua Noodle Soup (面线汤). Both costs a very reasonable $3.

We then took a walk around the food centre to look for our seats, ordered our kopi (coffee) and waited back in front of Yuan Porridge. All you have to do is just wait for aunty to call or wave for you once your orders are ready. We waited for about 15 minutes (probably due to the morning breakfast peak hours) and were served the porridge first. We waited another 5 minutes before the mee sua noodle soup was ready…
Both the Century Egg Congee With Pork and Mee Sua Soup were delicious. For the porridge, it was the slightly dry version which soaked in the flavours of the pork and century egg. For $3, the ingredients were very generous. Lots of century egg cut into bite-sized pieces and quite alot of minced meat. We especially enjoyed the mee sua, not only were there loads of ingredients (especially vegetables), the soup had the nostalgic taste – almost as though it was a nice homely-cooked bowl of mee sua. No pretense, just simple fresh ingredients and broth. Yum!
What else we had at Circuit Road Hawker Centre?
After we gobbled savoured the porridge and mee sua, we were actually quite full. But since we do not usually visit Circuit Road Food Centre and also because we saw that the mee siam next door seemed rather different, we decided to order a bowl to try it out. Hup Hup Mee Siam actually won some awards before and we saw that the broth looked more orangey (than reddish). This intrigued us…
The mee siam noodles itself was a little al dente and there weren’t too much ingredients here. Just the humble egg and tau pok (dried bean curd). But the star of this dish has got to be the mee siam gravy. It was appetising, attractive and had the most distinctive peanuty taste we’ve ever had in a mee siam. We’d imagine that alot of preparations had gone into it to develop this unique dish and flavour. Definitely worth a visit as well.
