Haig Road Market and Food Centre is located in the vicinity of Singapore’s bustling Geylang Serai – one of Singapore’s busiest and biggest wet markets. Haig Road Market and Food Centre is the largest food hub in the Geylang Serai area and is home to local hawker favourites such as putu piring and roti john. So what else is there to eat at this unmistakably Singaporean food joint? Let’s find out!
What Food to Eat at Haig Road Market and Food Centre #1: Zhenguang Wantan Noodles 正光雲吞面
Zhenguang Wantan Noodles (正光雲吞面) was started in the 1950s at the now-defunct Hollywood Theatre’s Hin Hollywood Canteen. Today, it has been relocated, a stone’s throw away to the Haig Road Market and Food Centre. The crowd has followed along as well. Hence, one of the easiest way to locate Zhenguang Wantan Noodles is by looking for a stall with a queue.
But what is so great about the wantan noodles at this stall? Nostalgic, old-school tastes (aka 古早味)…
This time, we ordered the $4 portion and as you can see, the portion is indeed quite generous. For $1 more, you get more wanton, more meat and more noodles. But what really stands out for us, is the taste and texture of its nostalgic, “memory-inducing” noodles. The generous soy sauce and pork lard mixture “dancing” with the slightly yeasty old-school-textured noodles on each bite? Unforgettable.
What Food to Eat at Haig Road Market and Food Centre #2: Nur Khairiah
There are actually several Muslim stalls at Haig Road Market and Food Centre. Hence, we were not actually sure which stall to try out during this visit. Eventually, we decided on Nur Khairiah because of the friendly owners who called out to us, the good selection of food, clean premise as well as its signboard that says “Since 1993” – yup almost 30 years in the business!
This time, we decided to go with Lontong ($3.5) and we were pleasantly surprised at what was served!
First off, the portion was generous. There were large servings of ketupat rice cakes, loads of vegetables, copious amounts of gravy and a nice sprinkle of crispy stir-fried hei bi hiam. Good for 2 to share.
As for the taste, we must say that it was probably the BEST LONTONG WE’VE HAD! The secret lies in the light yet flavourful gravy where a burst of spices and lemongrass accompanies the ingredients on each mouthful. Love the ketupat rice cakes as well. Just the right texture, which went perfectly with the gravy.
Our eyes actually brightened as we devoured this dish. Can’t wait to head back to try out another of our favourite, Tahu Goreng. If you’ve tried Nur Khairiah’s Tahu Goreng, let us know what you think in the comments section below!
What Food to Eat at Haig Road Market and Food Centre #3: Anisah’s Curry Puff
As we were heading to East Coast Park after our visit to Haig Road Market and Food Centre, we decided to ta pao (take-away) some curry puffs. We saw that Anisah’s signboard says “Anisah’s Curry Puff” and the “Since 1986” indicates that they’ve been doing this for over 30 years.
Each curry puff costs 60 cents and there’s a discount of 4 for $2. We found the sardine puffs to be sedap (delicious)! Slightly on the spicy side but a great snack nonetheless. The curry puff though was…ok…
What Food to Eat at Haig Road Market and Food Centre #4: Octopus Cafe
For our morning beverage, we chose to have kopi-peng (iced coffee) from Octopus Cafe. Mostly because it was close to Zhenguang Wantan Noodles and that there was a queue – usually indicating a certain level of quality.
As it turns out, the kopi-peng from Octopus Cafe was superb! Gao (thick) with hints of evaporated milk. Strongly recommend heading to Octopus Cafe for your morning coffee fix!
