One fine day, Kate said, “Would you like to have chicken rice and mutton soup at Purvis Street?”. Then I thought to myself, “Does mutton soup go with chicken rice?!”. But of course I replied, “Sure!” and it was definitely a decision I didn’t regret!

Purvis Street and its vicinity is known for chicken rice. However, at Chin Chin (津津) Eating House, besides chicken rice ($4), it is also known for its mutton soup (羊肉汤 – $6).

To round off the meal, we had the fried hor fun with fish slice (三捞河粉 – $5) as well as a aloe vera drink ($2.60).

In fact, all the dishes were excellent!

The hor fun had “wok hei” (slight charred taste) and the texture was “taong” (bouncy chew). Lightly seasoned to bring out the taste of the fish which also went really well with the green chili given. The chicken rice on the other had fragrant tasting rice that had every grain separated and well coated. The chicken on the other hand was tasty, tender and covered with a attractive layer of fat. Awesome! At $4, the portion of chicken was surprisingly large. Meaning you’re not really paying $4 for the brand but a larger portion of great tasting chicken! (By the way, we did not try roasted version during this visit, tell us more in the comments section if you have!)

Lastly, the star of the show, the herbal mutton soup! To be honest, this dish is definitely not for everyone. Firstly, if you don’t like your herbal soups, “deh” (buzzer sound), this dish is not for you. Secondly, if slight gamey mutton flavour’s not your game? This dish is not for you as well.

For everyone else, welcome to awesome, genius food paradise!

The herbal taste is not too strong but filled with the sweetness of 枸杞子 (wolfberry). You’ll also be able to enjoy black fungus which is seldom seen together with traditional herbal soups. The black fungus was crunchy and infused with the flavours of the soup. Shiok!

The mutton was so so SO TENDER! As you chew on a part of the meat, it tears right off the bone! Remember to dip into the special chili provided. We suspect there’s some chinese wine in there some where…*tipsy*

All in all, the top dish at Chin Chin was definitely the mutton soup for us. It is so awesome (and so cheap!) that it is only available on Fridays, Saturdays and PH (because of the amount of time needed for preparations). So remember to visit Chin Chin Eating House on these days to avoid disappointment!
