Sunscape Splash Montego Bay Jamaica: All-Inclusive Resort in the Caribbean

Sunscape Splash Montego Bay, an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, was where we stayed during our recent visit to Jamaica. If you’re not entirely familiar with the concept of all-inclusive, it basically means that food, drinks (inclusive of cocktails and alcoholic beverages) and entertainment are all included in the price of the room. Although we’ve experienced “all-inclusive” service while cruising with the Norwegian Cruise Line Drinks Package, enjoying an all-inclusive experience on land, especially at Montego Bay Jamaica, is a different experience altogether…

Sunscape Splash Montego Bay Deluxe Room

Due to the period that we were staying (super off-peak), we were able to snag a deal to stay at Sunscape Splash Montego Bay for less than $200 a night. That’s a fantastic deal given that all the food, drinks and entertainment were included in the price for 2 people. During our check-in, there was a small mishap. We were actually given keys to a room where there were already guests inside! Thankfully, when Kate opened the door, the family was watching TV. Awkward…

Our deluxe room was fairly simple. There was a bath tub and the mini bar was fully stocked for us to enjoy. There was even a note that tells you that the mini bar would be restocked daily and that Coco Cafe is opened 24 hours a day if you’re feeling peckish.

Our favourite part of the room was the sunrise that we would be greeted with every morning as it rises over the hills…

Each day, there will be a programme sheet (just like on a cruise) that tells you the programme for the day. A typical programe sheet shows..

Due to the Spirit Airlines flight delay, we only arrived at Sunscape Splash at about 10pm at night. After checking-in, we were just in time to have our dinner/supper at Barefoot Grill. Prior to our visit to Jamaica, we had learnt that Jerk Chicken was the must-try food, especially at Sunscape Splash Montego Bay. Hence, we did just that. Turns out, the Jerk Chicken was so good, we had seconds and even had it again for lunch the next day! Jerk Chicken is essentially roasted chicken splashed with jerk sauce – a spicy sauce made with Jamaican jerk spices. The chicken was always so tender and the sauce, hot and shiok! Also, you should try the Jamaican patties (similar to our curry puffs) and nachos with chili & cheese.

Some restaurants such as Portofino (Italian) and Gohan (Asian) only open during dinner hours. Prior to our visit, we found that Portofino was a restaurant that received pretty good reviews. We decided to try out the Grilled Sirloin as well as the Linguini with shrimp. The Sirloin was tasty, tender and had the fatty parts that Tom enjoyed while the shrimp was fresh and succulent. As with all-inclusive restaurants, house wines/beers are also available upon request. This evening, we had some white wine to go with the shrimp pasta.

If we were to recommend, stick to Portofino or Windows buffet for dinner. This is because most of the food at Gohan was not up to the mark for asian cuisine. Although Gohan scores in terms of presentation (look at the sushi plate!) but they really lacked in the taste department. The only saving grace of that meal was the curry fish. Fish was fresh but the rice that accompanied was poorly done. Avoid if possible.

Coco Cafe is the only dining venue which is open for 24 hours. As with cafes, pastries, cakes and some wraps are available all day. Try the latte or Jamaican coffee slush with Rum Cream!

Our favourite cocktail at Sunscape Splash Montego Bay has got to be Dirty Banana. Mud Slide and Pina Colada came in a close second. If all else fails, Red Stripe Beer (Jamaican Beer) is always fresh off the tap.

Facilities at Sunscape Splash Montego Bay

Sunscape Splash has a gym, 3 swimming pools, a water theme park (Pirate’s Paradise Waterpark) as well as views of the clear blue waters of the Caribbean. We spent most of the morning and early afternoon at Pirate’s Paradise, enjoying the sun, lazing in the lazy river and cruising down the water slides!

Here, you’ll be able to retrieve equipments to play at the mini golf course (yes, there’s a mini golf course at Sunscape Splash Montego Bay – Kate always beats Tom at mini golf!) and table tennis. Yes, Kate still won at mini golf eventhough we were each having one large cup of Pina Colada! :O

Nightly entertainment is held at the Main Stage next to Barefoot Grill. Performances were pretty local, with singing of old hits and dancing to Jamaican tunes…

Before we left the hotel, we also booked a morning tour of Hip Strip Montego Bay ($20 per pax). The tour essentially took us to the entrance of Hip Strip (next to Magaritaville), where we did some shopping. We then got some free time to roam Hip Strip ourselves.

We found that the cheapest rum cakes went for $5 USD for the small ones. Expensive but tastes really good. In a pack of 3, the flavours include chocolate, original and Blue Mountain Coffee. Remember to negotiate while you shop at Hip Strip! The other thing we found out was that people actually know our late founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew! He had met with Jamaica’s then-Prime Minister Michael Manley when Singapore started out.

Getting to and from Sunscape Splash Montego Bay

We got to Sunscape Splash by booking for an airport transfer through Expedia. Upon arrival at the airport, we headed to the booth and eventhough the flight was delayed, we were still able to board the transfers to our hotel. At the hotel, we arranged for transfer to our next hotel. It was here where we met our friend Oliver…

Oliver not only does transfers, he also runs a tour company called Oliver Jam Rock Tours. If you’re visiting Jamaica (not only Montego Bay), drop him an email (jamrock1910@gmail.com) or whatsapp (876-371-6959) and he’ll be able to make arrangements for you to see and enjoy Jamaica. Glad to have met him cause as our Jamaican teacher, he taught us the following (which will come in handy in Jamaica)

1. Hi/How are doing/What’s going on : Whaa Gwan
2. Good/Excellent : Irie (pronounced as eye-ree)
3. See you later : Cya Likkle More

During a typical meal at the restaurant, you can say

You: “Whaa Gwan”
Waiter: (Surprised and gives you a fist bump) “What can I get for you today Sir?”
Waiter: (Comes back after food was served) “How’s the food?”
You: “Irie Mon” (mon is like the slang for man, fist bump again if the food is really awesome)
(Before you leave)
You: “Thank you for the wonderful dinner. Cya Likkle More.”
