During our recent trip to Memphis Tennessee, we checked out some of the best food joints and attractions in Memphis. You can check out these attractions in our Top 5 Things to do in Memphis post as well. Since this post is all about food, let’s get straight down to some of the yummilicious offerings in Memphis!
Where to eat in Memphis: Central BBQ
There are several reasons why we have started to include Uber as part of our travel essential. Not only is it cheaper to travel with Uber, you’ll also be able to interact with locals as well. During one particular Uber ride, we found out from our driver that Central BBQ is where locals hang out. A quick check with Tripadvisor found Central BBQ to be ranked at #7! We decided to head over for its famous BBQ ribs and were thoroughly satisfied.

We went direct for the 3 meats and had the dry & “wet” ribs, along with the beef brisket and roasted chicken. The beef brisket and roasted chicken were good but not GREAT. Nonetheless, the ribs more than made up for the entire meal. Yes, the ribs were GREAT! The dry rub gave the slightest of crisp on each bite while the rib itself was thoroughly infused with the smoky taste of a Memphis BBQ. The meat was tender and moist. The colour of the meat itself was light-brownish, demonstrating the depth of the smokiness infused into the meat. Probably the best BBQ meat we’ve ever tasted!
Where to drink in Memphis: The Lookout at the Pyramid
Sure there are many great food joints and watering holes at Beale Street Memphis. However, at the Lookout at the Pyramid, you’ll be able to enjoy great sunsets and a great cocktail as well.

Some people wonder whether you’ll be able to see sunsets in Memphis, given that it is actually “landlocked” between Tennessee and Arkansas. Well, the answer is a resounding yes! This is because the Lookout at the Pyramid is high enough and overlooks the Mississippi River with a really flat horizon. Which is why it works!
There are drawbacks though. It costs $10 to get up to the Lookout and the cocktails are quite expensive at $14. Good cocktails, but expensive. You could also opt to have one cocktail and one coffee like us to reduce the cost. Another way to avoid the lift tickets would be to dine at the Lookout at the Pyramid which starts at 5pm – in time for sunset. Be disciplined in having the Fried Chicken or White Fish (both ~$20+) and you’ll be able to enjoy the splendid views without paying for the lift tickets. Last word of advice, arrive about an hour prior to sunset, enjoy the views and head outside to take pictures/videos during sunset! You’ll love it!
Where to eat AND drink in Memphis: Beale Street

For great food, great drinks and live entertainment, you’ll probably won’t go wrong with Beale Street in Memphis. On our first night in Memphis, one local told us that “you’ll probably be at Beale Street every night”. He was right! Check out the video of the great live entertainment available here. We thoroughly enjoyed the authentic Blues and Rock & Roll music played nightly at Beale Street. Also, you’ll be able to enjoy great foods such as Gumbo Fries (Blues City Cafe), BBQ Ribs (BB King’s Blues Club) and Chicken & Waffles (Miss Polly’s Soul City Cafe). Beale Street – simply a must visit venue for the combination of food, drinks and entertainment in Memphis!
