There are so many things to do and attractions in Memphis Tennessee! Thanks to the great folks at Memphis Travel, we were able to cover some of these attractions. In this post, we distill the top 5 things that you should do on your next trip to Memphis!
Top Things to do in Memphis – 1. Graceland & Elvis Presley Museum
You knew that right off the bat, we’ll be mentioning Graceland right? It is probably the biggest attraction in Memphis given that it was the home of Elvis Presley and is still use by the family today when they return to Memphis. More than that, you’ll be able to learn more about the life of Elvis (at the Elvis Presley Museum EPM), about how determined he was to have his music heard and how devoted he was to God and family. In addition, you’ll be able to see his collection of cars and see the unbelievable modifications that were made within the jet plane named after his daughter – Lisa Marie. Lastly, his final resting ground, Meditation Garden, can also be visited daily from 0730 to 0830 for free.
Top Things to do in Memphis – 2. Sun Studio
After finishing your tour at Graceland, head on over to Sun Studio, the birthplace of Rock n Roll and learn about how Elvis Presley got his big break there. Here, you’ll be able to learn how characters such as Marion Keisker, Sam Phillips and Dewey Phillips helped propel Elvis into stardom. You’ll also learn about legends (such as blues legend BB King) who recorded with Sun Studios (originally named as Memphis Recording Service) and how the Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis – Great Balls of Fire, Carl Perkins – Blue Suede Shoes & Johnny Cash – I Walk the Line) came to be known as that.
Top Things to do in Memphis – 3. Beale Street
When someone mentions about Memphis, the song “Walking In Memphis” by Marc Cohn comes to mind. In particular, the chorus
Then I’m walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel
Yup, Beale refers to Beale Street, home of the Blues. These days, you’ll be able to enjoy Rock & Roll, Blues and Soul along Beale Street. To make things more attractive, great foods such as Gumbo Fries (Blues City Cafe), BBQ Ribs (BB King’s Blues Club) and Chicken & Waffles (Miss Polly’s Soul City Cafe) can be enjoyed along Beale Street as well. Definitely a great venue in Memphis to have a great meal and enjoy some of the best music in town!
Top Things to do in Memphis – 4. National Civil Rights Museum
Not to be missed is the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. The National Civil Rights Museum tells about the civil rights movement in USA even after slavery was abolished and voting rights given to the African-American. Stories such as Rosa Parks (not giving up her seat on a segregated bus) and Dr Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech to his eventual assassination at the Lorraine Motel are covered in much detail at the NCRM. Definitely worth a visit while in Memphis.
Top Things to do in Memphis – 5. BBQ, Cat Fish & Burgers!
Once our friendly Uber driver knew that we were tourists, she immediately asked whether we’ve had any BBQ. Nope, she did not ask whether we’ve been to Graceland or Sun Studios. BBQ. Immediately. So we asked her which was the best. To that, she replied with confidence – Central BBQ. We did a quick check and it was ranked #7 in Memphis! :O Hence, we decided to check it out. We had the mix of both dry rub and “wet” ribs and they were simply one of the best, if not the best BBQ ribs we’ve ever tasted! The meat fell off the bone but not only that, the slow cooked meat were well infused with the store’s recipe as well! We’ve also tried Cat Fish @ Kooky Canuck, Gumbo Fries @ Blues City Cafe (recommended by NBA Star Chris Webber) and Bluff City Burger at Huey’s. Enjoy your gastronomical journey while in Memphis y’all! P.S. if you’ve been to the Flying Fish, tell us about it in the comments section below!
Other Things to do in Memphis
We also did a couple of other things while in Memphis, including catching the Memphis Grizzlies play against the San Antonio Spurs – which they won by the way. What?! A visit to the Memphis Pyramid (Bass Pro Outdoor World) is also recommended if you have the time.
The Memphis Pyramid is actually a Bass Pro / Outdoor World shop that sells anything and everything related to the outdoors such as fishing, camping, ATV and hiking. In addition to that, due to it’s shape, many people take shots with its exterior and also ascend to the top to enjoy amazing views of sunset. Sunset in Memphis? A landlocked state in USA? Yes! This is because, the landscape is flat enough while the viewing platform at Memphis Pyramid is tall enough, providing amazing views of the sun setting over the horizon. In addition, you’ll be able to play cosmic bowling (~$35 for 2 people to bowl for an hour – we played close to 8 games in total) and see ducks, fish tanks and huge carps within the shop itself!

While you’re in Memphis and if time (and game) affords, check out the Memphis Grizzlies play at the Fedex Forum. These days, they play really well as a team. Plus, we were told by friends we met in Jamaica (who are locals in Memphis) that the NBA tickets are really cheap because of the blue collared workers there. We caught the game for only $14! :O
